

Mildred graduated from Wayne County High School, Waynesboro, MS, and was a member of First Baptist Church. Attending the University of Southern Mississippi, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. After receiving a B.S. Degree in Education, with a minor in Music, she was employed as a teacher in the Wayne County School System. In 1958, Mildred's family moved to Birmingham, AL. She later earned a Master's Degree in Ps ychology, with a focus in testing and evaluation, from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Her career as a dedicated educator continued as a teacher at N.H. Price Elementary School and as a Psychometrist, at the Birmingham Board of Education.
During WWII, Mildred served in the Red Cross as a “Gray Lady” at Veteran's hospitals. They saved the hearts and souls of hundreds of wounded service members by writing letters home, entertaining and listening to their stories. Mildred entertained them as a talented pianist.
Mildred loved to play bridge, read, knit, and play the piano. She was an excellent tennis player in her earlier years. She and her late husband, Earl, were former members of The Club and enjoyed many years of traveling abroad. A former Choir Director at Fairfield Presbyterian Church, Fairfield, AL, she had been a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Homewood, AL for the last 32 years.
Mildred adored her two sons and was a phenomenal role model. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. Many happy times were spent with her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her life was blessed with dear friends and family who were impacted by her love and incredible spirit.
Mildred is preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas McGehee Browne and Earl Magnuson; her infant son, Lowell William Browne, two brothers, Dwight Tew and Lowell Tew.
She is survived by her two loving sons, David Bricker Browne (Debbie) of Franklin, TN; Thomas Mc Gehee “Bo” Browne (Glenda) of Birmingham, AL; five grandchildren, Garrett Browne of Hollywood, CA, Patrick Browne of Trussville, AL, Erin B. Khan of Franklin, TN, Ashley B. Shearron of Atlanta, Ga, Riley Browne of Salem, VA; five great-grandchildren, Nadia, Oliva, and David Khan, Elli and Parker Browne; three nephews, Billy Tew (Janie), LA, Kimble Tew (Madeline), Bill Tew (Mindy); niece Carol Tew Dean (Robert) and a host of great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, December 15, from 1:00- 2:00 p.m.at Ridout's Valley Chapel, Homewood, AL. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with Dr. Andrew R. Wolfe officiating. A reception will follow the funeral service in Edgewood Parlor, at Ridout's Valley Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:00 p.m., at Freeman Funeral Home, Waynesboro, MS on Tuesday, December 16. A graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m , at Waynesboro Cemetery.
