Monterey was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and The University of Alabama. A passionate college football fan, she faithfully supported the Crimson Tide throughout her long and happy life. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, and a member of Highlands United Methodist Church.
Students at Highlands School loved "Miss Monterey" for the many years she taught kindergarten there. She then became one of the original Goodwill Ambassadors at Eastern Airlines, before working for The Duke Insurance Agency of Homewood.
She loved to travel throughout the United States (especially New York City) as well as on international adventures in Argentina, Uruguay, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, China, Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica, among others. Monterey was also devoted to animal welfare organizations, and never met a cat she didn’t love.
Monterey is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Tee Hansford Hiett, her daughters Lynne Monterey Hutton of Birmingham, Alabama, and Deborah Hiett Valenti (Matthew) of Los Angeles, California, and her grandson, Kirby Whitaker Hutton, of Los Angeles, California.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Greater Birmingham Humane Society, Highlands United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Brookdale University Park, 400 University Park Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209.
