He then continued his education at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), receiving his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1950. After re-enlisting in the Air Force just prior to his marriage to Carolyn in mid-1951, Myron served during the Korean War with SAC, being honorably discharged in 1952 with the rank of Lieutenant. Moving back to Birmingham, Myron had a prestigious career as the Director of Buildings and Inspections for the City of Birmingham for over 30 years, retiring in 1982. During his career, Myron served as member and ultimately President of the Southern Building Code Congress International, as well as Chairman of the Standards Committee and was instrumental in the orchestration, development and implementation of the foundational standard building codes utilized in the southern states and ultimately throughout the United States (International Building Code). A golfing, boating, hunting, skeet-shooting, gun collector, model boat and airplane enthusiast, Myron enjoyed many extra-curricular activities. He loved “dinking around” in his workshop, crafting knife handles, letter openers, and stamp dispensers and building his models. He also was an active member of the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club for many years, and liked radio-talking (keying) with people all over the world. Myron was a member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and chairing the building committee for the church. He and Carolyn traveled extensively during his career and enjoyed being with the many friends they had throughout the United States. He also had a genuine understanding and appreciation of objects he fondly called “shiny hickeys” and sought out “Shiny Hickey” stores everywhere he traveled. Myron married Carolyn Welch on May 18, 1951; they were married 64 years and she precedes him in death. Myron is survived in life by daughters Susan M. Sasser (Clem) and her husband Steven W. Clem of Atlanta, GA, Cathy L. Sasser and her husband Steven V. Bing of Peachtree Corners, GA, grandson Blake C. Clem of Atlanta, GA, and granddaughter Jaime K. Clem of Charlotte, NC. Lord, when Thou seest that my work is done,Let me not linger on,With failing powers,A down the weary hours, - A workless worker in a world of work.
But with a word,Just bid me home, And I will come Right gladly, -Yes, right gladly Will I come. John Oxenham
