

Nana Gill Christian, age 82, a resident of Vestavia Hills, Alabama passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 30, 2017. She was born in Birmingham July 14, 1935 to Robert Edmond Gill and Nell Louise Gill. She grew up in the West End section of Birmingham and graduated from West End High School in 1953. Nana graduated from University of Alabama in 1957 with a BS degree in Chemistry and Medical Technology. She later graduated from UAB with a BA and MA in Education. She taught chemistry at W. A. Berry High School for 22 years. In the mid-1970s Nana was honored by receiving an award as the Chemistry Teacher of the Year for the State of Alabama. She has been an active member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church for 55 years and was an active member of The Faith Class Sunday School. Nana was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister, an avid flower gardener, fantastic cook and always enjoyed preparing big Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for her entire family. She loved the beach and enjoyed going to her second home in Panama City Beach for 32 years. She especially liked traveling and went on 23 cruises including excursions to Europe, the Caribbean, Turkey, Greece and many other islands.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, John R. Christian, her son John R. Christian, Jr., (Meg), daughters Susan G. Christian, Sarah N. McGee (Eric), and Nancy L. Stein (David). Grandchildren, John R. Christian III, Gill Christian, Kate Christian, Jennifer Apicella, Elizabeth Apicella, William McGee, Kyle McGee, Caroline Hawk (Burnham), Christian Stein, Audey Stein, one great grandchild Layla Apicella, also her brother Robert Edmond Gill, Jr. (Sammie), her sisters-in laws Peggy C. Hanks and Betty C. Slaughter and many nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday November 5, 2017, at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Homewood, Alabama followed by a celebration of life service in fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting to donate to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
