Nancy G. VanWanderham was a presence that left this world peacefully in her home, with her family on March 31, 2021. She was born on April 1, 1934 to Ray and Lottie Grant. She was preceded in death by her daughter Victoria VanWanderham and husband James Burton VanWanderham. She is survived by her four daughters; Dawn Helton (Don), Bethany Stewart (Butch), Andrea VanWanderham, and Kandace VanWanderham (Paul), her three granddaughters Amanda Helton, Ashleigh Helton, Eva Feinman, and her great granddaughter Brookleigh Duncan. Our Mom lived an amazing 86 years, leaving us just shy of her 87th birthday. Mom loved to work beginning at the age of 14 at Silvers Five and Dime, “selling hair tonics to drunks”, to a buyer at Feldsteins for 15 years, and Alands for 2 years. She established the credit department at JC Penny. Working for Mayer Lighting Showroom for 25 years, as a Lighting Designer, she retired at 72, and again at 74, and then finally at 75 when she discontinued her private consulting. Mom traveled the world with some of her dearest friends from the East coast to the West coast and all throughout Europe. Closer to home she was a member and volunteer for several organizations that include, but not limited to Business and Professional Women’s Foundation, Soroptimist Club, Birmingham Ventures Club Founder and Treasurer for 30 years, Symphony Volunteer Council, The Opera Guild, Veteran’s Club, Salvation Army Women’s Auxillary, Salvation Army Angel Tree and Birmingham Festival of Arts. Mom’s zest for life was apparent. She never missed a party, never met a stranger, had a smile that lit up a room, and the prettiest blue eyes you’ve seen. She was beautiful. She had her dry sense of humor to the end, and always loved watching Auburn football with her girls and family. Mom was grace and a quiet strength. She has finished her travels here on earth but is embarking on a new adventure to a vast, peaceful, and glorious place. We will miss her dearly, but we will find comfort in our memories. Celebration of life will be held at Ridouts Valley Chapel in Homewood on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 2:00pm with visitation from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers Mom has requested memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army or the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

Dear Dawn, Beth, Andrea and Kandace,

Remembering your mother takes me back a long way. I knew her in high school and then we married brothers. We had our first children about the same time. We both had more children and bumps along the way, including the passing of your father at such a young age.

Nan, as I knew her; did a fabulous job raising the four of you alone. Kudos to her !!

My life in south Florida has kept me from interacting with her for so long, however, I did keep up via phone. She was always so bright and cheerful, always interesting and interested in what I had to say. She was a bright star.

My condolences, sympathies and love to all four of you in this most difficult time in your lives. But, never feel that you are alone....the Nan that I know will always be just over your shoulder, watching and being proud.
My love to each of you, as well as Vicki.
My glass is raised to you, Nan !
Shirley
