Patricia Hennesy Sloan, born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 6, 1928 and formerly of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on March 27, 2014 in Birmingham, Alabama. She moved to Birmingham in 1996 to be closer to her children and grandchildren, who loved her dearly for her candor, wisdom, and humor. A polio survivor since age 22, she was an exemplary model of resilience and strength. Her love of beauty and art led her to long and valued service as a docent at her beloved Bayley Museum at the University of Virginia and later at the Birmingham Museum of Art. Above all else, she loved and cherished her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Thomas Dwight Sloan. She is survived by her four devoted children: T. Dwight Sloan III (Susan), Ellen Sloan Childers (Randall), Penelope Sloan Hoke (the late Timothy), and Margaret Sloan Presley: by her ten adored grandchildren: Jennifer Dill (Randy), Amy Kirchoff (Jon), Anderson Hoke (Jodie), Thomas Hoke (Abbi), John Hoke, John Presley (Kei), Benjamin Presley (Rachel), Ellen Presley, Timothy Presley and Carey Childers; and her eight wonderful great grandchildren: Angela Kirchoff, Anders Kirchoff, Sloan Dill, Robinson Hoke, Hannah Hoke, Edwin Presley, Addison Presley and Margo Presley. She was the heart and soul of her family and she will be greatly missed.
The family will hold a private memorial. Interment will be at a later date in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the University of Virginia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the March of Dimes (450 Century Park S, Birmingham, AL 35226), to Marion Medical Mission (1412 Shawnee Drive, Marion, IL 62959), or to a charity of your choice.
