Pauline Farmer “Polly” Austin, 98 of Homewood, Al passed away on Monday, May 20, 2019. She was born on January 15, 1921 in Wilson, North Carolina to Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Farmer, Sr. After high school, she graduated from James Walker Memorial Hospital of Nursing in Wilmington, North Carolina and devoted the rest of her life to caring for others.
Known to her friends as Polly, she loved to entertain and never met a stranger. She enjoyed cooking, baking and was well known for her famous coconut cake. Polly was preceded in death by her parents, Nancy Bailey Farmer and William Henry Farmer, Sr.; her husband Earl Lee Austin; her sisters Addie Farmer Murray, Maddie Farmer, Lucy Mae Farmer and Barbara Farmer Guzek; her brother, William henry Farmer, Jr; and her son-in-law Stuart Norris Shevin. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Austin Shevin; her grandchildren, Rachael Sara Shevin (Benjamin Hazan) and Jacob Austin Shevin (Sara); and her great grandchildren, Stuart Austin Shevin and William Grey Stevin.
The family would like to thank Polly’s caregivers Marie Parks, Velma Swain, LaKeshia Jenkins and Karen Swain for the love and care they provided.
Family graveside services will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 9 am at Elmwood Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow in the Gazebo Room at Brookdale University Park at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, Polly would ask you to hide money in your freezer for a rainy day.
