Born in Centreville, AL, Peggy earned a degree in Biology from Alabama College and later worked as a substitute teacher. She was a Cub Scout Leader and was awarded both the District Award of Merit and the Silver Fawn Award. She was a Sunday school teacher at East Lake United Methodist Church for many years before she moved to St. Marks United Methodist. She and her husband were members of the Birmingham Fern Society and Birmingham Wildflower Society, volunteering to help plant and maintain the Fern Glade at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. She became adept at growing ferns from spores, corresponding with other growers across the globe. She was also an instructor for the ‘55 Alive’ Driver Education Program.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Samuel Terry McGill. She is survived by her sons, Gregory Allen McGill (Lynn) and Samuel Terry McGill, Jr, granddaughter Tama Blackstone and great-grandchildren Harris Clasen Blackstone, Hayes Gaughan Blackstone, John Hall Blackstone and Margaret Francis Blackstone.
Visitation will be at Valley Chapel in Homewood, AL on Friday, Dec. 12 from 5pm to 7pm. Services will be Saturday afternoon at Chinagrove Methodist Church near Moundville, AL.
