Peggy W. Page passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026 in Birmingham at the age of 97. Born New Year’s Day 1929 in Albany, Georgia to parents Wendell H. Wise and Lorene Stuart Wise, she spent all of her formative years in Selma, graduating from A.G. Parish High School. While growing up, in addition to working after school and in the summers for her parents’ dry cleaning business, she also spent many happy days with her maternal grandparents, Dr. William L. Stuart and Etta Stuart of Sardis. On many occasions, she would travel with her grandfather to small communities in Dallas and Wilcox County as he would make his medical rounds visiting patients. In addition to her parents, Dr. Stuart was an early influence, teaching the values that service to others was paramount, a trait she emulated throughout her life with everyone she came in contact with, particularly her family.
After graduating from high school in Selma, Peggy enrolled at The University of Alabama, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education. While at the University, she was also a member of Delta Delta Delta and enjoyed many of those sorority friendships for the remainder of her life. Shortly after her college graduation, she met her husband, Harlan Ashley Page, Jr., on a blind date which began a wonderful married adventure that lasted for 52 years until his death in January of 2009. The majority of their married years were spent as residents of Bay Minette, being highly active in many aspects of the community, primarily the First United Methodist Church.
Peggy was an educator at both Bay Minette Middle School and Baldwin County High School for a combined 31 years, ultimately retiring in 1984. She was highly respected by administrators, fellow teachers and students. Her primary gifts combined disciplined instruction in the classroom with a unique ability to encourage her students that wonderful futures were ahead of them if they adopted a true love of lifetime learning. Many anecdotal stories, which are too numerous to count, concern former students who would visit her later in life to let her know that she had made a tremendous difference for them in the arc of both their professional and private lives. For many years after retirement, she continued to serve and encourage until past age 90, most recently as a volunteer for Shelby Baptist Medical Center.
She is survived by her son, Harlan Ashley Page, III (Whitney) of Homewood and by her granddaughter, Caroline Page Weber (Patrick) of Atlanta. She will be forever loved and greatly missed by a family that considered her life a tremendous gift to us.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 30th, at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, Alabama.
Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (205.879.3401) in Homewood.
