Dr. Perry A. Morgan Jr.

Dr. Perry A. Morgan, Jr. began his earthly life on December 18th, 1917 in Birmingham, and entered into his life eternal on April 17th, 2012. He leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 69 years, Barbara Callaway Morgan, his devoted children, Dale Morgan Miller (David) and James Perry Morgan (Elaine), seven adoring grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and his brother, Dr. Richard E. Morgan (Judy). He is now reunited with his mother, Elva Mabry Morgan, his father, Perry A. Morgan, Sr., his sister, Rebecca Morgan Hope (Jack), and his brother, Dr. William P. Morgan (Mary Alice).

After graduating from Ensley High School in 1935, he entered Birmingham-Southern College, where he served as President of Beta Kappa Fraternity. Following completion of his junior year at Birmingham-Southern College, his academic career continued at The University of Alabama Medical School in Tuscaloosa. Upon graduating from U of A in 1939, he entered Medical School at The University of Tennessee, receiving his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1943. While at UT, he was inducted into Phi Beta Pi. His internship at TCI Hospital was under the direction of Dr. Lloyd Noland. He served residencies at University Hospital in Birmingham and Barnard Skin and Cancer Hospital in St. Louis.

During World War II, he served in the Army Medical Corps riding on the trains that transported wounded soldiers. He received an honorable discharge in 1947 with the rank of Captain.

Dr. Morgan was a pioneer in the medical field of radiology. He practiced over thirty years with The Birmingham Radiological Group which he and four other doctors founded. This group traveled to many cities throughout the state whose hospitals did not have radiologists to read the x-ray films. He received the Certificate of Distinction for Fifty Years of Service from the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. In 1969, he served as President of the Medical Staff at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair (Trinity), where he was Chair of the Department of Radiology and was awarded The Outstanding Physician Award from the Department of Radiology in 1977. He was also on staff as an Associate Professor of Radiology at The University of Alabama Medical College.

As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for over 60 years, Dr. Morgan (affectionately called “Dr. Pete”) was involved in many areas, including Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Endowment Committee, member of the Men’s Chorus, and an honorary member of the United Methodist Women.

Dr. Morgan was an avid Alabama football fan, a charter member of Vestavia Country Club where he looked forward to golfing with his buddies, a history buff and voracious reader, and a proud Patriot. He enjoyed travelling, time at the lake, and most especially, he loved spending time with his family. He was a humble, compassionate, gentle and loving man, and was an inspiration and mentor to many. He was a strong Christian whose life exemplified faithfulness, generosity, and trust in the Lord. A good and faithful servant, he will be missed by all who love him, but there is joy in the knowledge that he is whole and well again.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 20th from 12:30-2:15 pm in the Parlor of Trinity United Methodist Church, 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood. The service will follow at 2:30 pm in the Church Sanctuary, conducted by Dr. Andrew Wolfe, Senior Pastor. There will be a private, family burial following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Endowment Fund at Trinity United Methodist Church.
