Phillip Goodwin passed away peacefully on February 2, 2022 after a long battle with chronic pulmonary disease. He was the beloved husband of the late Sharon Goodwin, devoted father of Thomas Goodwin, Nicole Goodwin and Phillip Goodwin Jr., and cherished companion of Pamela Lacey.
Phillip was a career service member in the US Army, retiring as Captain and holding multiple MP and logistical leadership postings throughout the US, Europe and Korea. He also was a distinguished member of the 1st Infantry Division and valiantly served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Army, Phil held several retail executive management positions, primarily in Florida, where he raised his family and resided for more than 40 years.
Born in Alabama in 1941, Phil relocated to his home state in 2018 to reconnect with cherished friends, family, fellow Roll Tide fans, and to fish daily from his boat or dock on the world-famous Coosa River.
In addition to fishing, Phil was an avid and gifted gardener of many varieties of flowers, fruits and vegetables, which he loved to share with neighbors and friends.
But mostly, Phil was just a gentle and decent man, known for his sparkling blue eyes, his warmth, corny sense of humor, generosity and good cheer. He will be sorely missed by all of his loved ones.
A celebration of Phil’s life will take place at Ridout’s Valley Chapel on Monday, February 7th 3-5pm, followed by a service and burial at Alabama National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 8th 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor to one of two charities that benefit veterans-in-need: Volunteers of America https://www.voa.org or the Fisher House https://fisherhouse.org.
