Carroll “Rex” Smith was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He left this world and gained his angel wings on Dec 1 at the age of 87. His nearly three year long battle with a debilitating medical condition highlighted his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite being confined to a bed, Rex let everyone know that his situation was only temporary and that he would be back to work and up on a ladder very soon. He stayed strong and determined until the end.
Rex met the love of his life, Barbara, while at the county fair. It was love at first sight for him and throughout their 65 years of marriage, she supported him every step of the way. Together, they had three children: Fernando, Bonita and Raven. Many people dream of loving their jobs but Rex truly had a passion for his. For 50 years, he lived his dream of welding and repairing heavy machinery while working for Thompson Tractor. Rex rarely sat down but when he did, he spent it with his grandkids, sharing stories from his past and fixing things around the house.
Rex will be lovingly remembered by his wife; children; grandchildren: Alex, Isabella, Mitch (Emma), Hayden and Caroline; brothers, Orville (Diane) and Dennis as well as numerous relatives and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Donna Sigrist for her care and compassion. Rex will be honored in a celebration of life on Wednesday, December 8th at Cahaba Heights Baptist Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 10am with the funeral service to follow at 12 noon.
Flowers may be sent to Cahaba Heights Baptist Church.
