Richard Francis Di Piazza, age 69, of Birmingham, AL died April 17, 2023. The Rite of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Homewood, AL with the Reverend Richard Donohoe presiding. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with Ridout’s Valley Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Anthony Di Piazza Anthony and Eva Schifanella Di Piazza, and Anthony and Mary Costa Mundi. Survivors include his wife, Gina, daughter Taylor (Cody) Hawthorne and son, Richard Walton Di Piazza all of Birmingham: mother, Florence Mundi Di Piazza of Birmingham: brothers Anthony (Pamela) Di Piazza, of Birmingham and Samuel (Melody) A. Di Piazza, Jr. of Maryland: sisters Rosemary (Michael) Jones and Kathy Di Piazza, both of Birmingham, and numerous nieces, nephews as well as grandnieces and grandnephews.
Born May 19, 1953 in Birmingham, AL, Richard Francis, was known to his family and friends as Rick. He graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham, AL and attended the University of Alabama. He found his life’s work in the grocery business, the only one of his generation to continue the legacy of his father and grandfathers. He spent much of his career working for Piggly Wiggly in Birmingham.
Rick was a man of strong faith. He loved his Lord and his family above all things. He was a steadfast friend. He loved the earth that God made and enjoyed many days and hours on the waters of this earth spending time with the family and friends he loved so dearly. He was a true and steady soul always ready with a smile. Rick was never one to make any circumstance about himself. It was always about you – the other person. He understood the true meaning of love, to will the good of others.
