March 2, 1934 – June 13, 2018
Richard Edwin Hobgood, age 84, died peacefully at home in Birmingham, Alabama on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Richard was born on March 2, 1934 in Starkville, Mississippi to Robert Edwin and Myron Edna Richards Hobgood. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1959. He spent two years in the navy, and eventually moved to Birmingham, Alabama where he would marry Julie Anne Lasseter on April 3, 1966. Together, they raised two children, James Frederick and Martha Michelle Hobgood.
Richard was known by many names among his family and friends: Uncle Rich, Hop, Paw Paw, Daddy, Ree-shard and Pops just to name a few. Always with a joke at the ready and a smile on his face, Richard was the consummate optimist, approaching every situation with “Aww, it’s alright. It’ll be just fine!”
When Richard wasn’t being the best Grandad, Uncle, Father, or friend, he logged thousands of miles in his vehicle, traveling the Southeast for Roper Supply Company in Picayune, Mississippi to ensure that Sheriff’s Departments and local law enforcement agencies had what they needed to keep us safe. He was the cook at the hunting camp, he was the hospitality host at every conference. If you needed something, Richard would gladly get it. As well as a few other things you didn’t ask for. The man loved to go to the store!
Once the disease started to take its toll, Anne quickly came to his side to provide care. Nothing could stop Anne from making sure he had everything medically possible to help battle this disease. She also relied on many caregivers to help out including: Cedric, LaTrice, Victoria, and Connie. As well as the wonderful people from Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, Lakeshore Rehabilitation and Affinity Hospice.
He is predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Myron Hobgood. He is survived by Anne Hobgood, his brothers David and Robert Hobgood, his children Jim Hobgood and Michelle Hill and their spouses Rachael and John, and his grandchildren John Hobgood, Patrick and Allison Hill.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. at Johns-Rideout’s Funeral Home, located at 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209.
