Robert Wayne Carnes

Wayne was a proud family man and leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Cindy, children, Cameron (Carlson) and Katherine (Nathan), brother, Randy (Alora), mother-in-law, Margaret, bonus-children, Scott Carpenter and Caylie Atkinson, his beloved pets, Bella and Courtney, and many close friends. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents.

Wayne graduated from UAB and owned several businesses before working at and retiring from AT&T. He was a huge Alabama fan and an avid golfer. He won many tournaments, most notably three Senior Club Championships at Inverness Country Club.

Last summer, Wayne thrived through a double lung transplant at Duke University Hospital. His competitive spirit shone throughout as he met and exceeded every goal they set for him. We are incredibly thankful to his doctors and especially his donor for the amazing gift they gave us of Wayne’s last months being healthy and active.

Wayne was an incredible man, and we welcome all who knew and loved him to a memorial service at 2 PM on Friday, March 24, with visitation beginning at noon at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209.

In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations to your favorite charity. Some of Wayne’s favorites were Asbury United Methodist Church, Jimmy Hale Mission, and St. Jude’s. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
