Robert Stephens “Bob” McKinney, a man of imposing physical presence and extraordinary intellect, passed away peacefully in his home on November 8, surrounded by loved ones. A "big guy" with stature that commanded attention and a mind that earned deep respect, he lived a life defined by strength, ambition, generosity, and profound achievement across many arenas.
Bob was born in Jacksonville, FL to Robert F. and Nellie McKinney. Growing up in Atlanta, he graduated from Lakeside High School and went on to the University of Georgia (UGA), where he first distinguished himself in sports. Known for his powerful build and competitive fire, he was a standout athlete who excelled in both football and wrestling in his high school and collegiate careers. The disciplined dedication on the field and mat forged a drive that would fuel his success for years to come. During Bob’s college days, he was also a devoted member of the Chi Psi fraternity, forming key friendships he treasured throughout his life.
Following his athletic career, Bob earned his Juris Doctor degree from Woodrow Wilson School of Law in Atlanta. He then channeled his strategic mind and remarkable understanding into the corporate world. He was widely recognized as a brilliant executive with a keen intellect and quickly rose to significant leadership roles. Throughout his distinguished career, he served as a key executive in several different start up and established companies, leaving an indelible impact on the financial sector of the service industry: notably hotel, funeral, cemetery and crematory operations. At the height of his career, he provided operational, financial, marketing, mergers and acquisitions, information systems, HR, compliance, risk management and IPO management oversight to several multibillion dollar organizations.
Bob spent much of his time discretely paving the way for the success of others. He helped in a variety of ways - emotional, spiritual, professional, and financial through his guidance, advice, wisdom, and professional acumen. His colleagues will remember him for his sharp insight, decisive leadership, and his ability to tackle complex challenges with clarity and vision during his long and storied professional career.
A dedicated man of faith, Bob spent many years serving the Birmingham United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, GA. He was instrumental in fostering the church's growth in membership and community strength and he enriched the lives of many as a teacher of the Disciples' class.
Bob was preceded in death by both his parents along with his brother, Norman H. McKinney. He is survived by his beloved wife Melissa Melton Jones McKinney and son, McClain McKinney (Hattie), who was the light of his life. Other survivors include: his adopted mother Linda W. McKinney; brothers and sisters; Priscilla Harrison (Larry), Nellie Cochran, Charlotte Eaton (Jack), Patti McCoy (L.C.), James E. “Jimmy”McKinney, Elizabeth Crumley (Paul), W. Thomas “Tommy” McKinney (Diane), Cathy Meredith (Randy) and Mary Herrmann (Michael), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
There is no way to capture the essence of Bob McKinney in a few words or paragraphs. Suffice it to say that he was indeed a “gentle giant” who always put others before himself. He was generous to a fault and this big man had an even bigger heart. He had a dramatic impact on countless lives, both personally and professionally. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A service to celebrate his remarkable life will be held in Atlanta following the holidays. Details to be announced at a later date.
