

Roger Franklin Mills passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2025. He was born on October 25, 1941 in Winfield, Alabama to Chelsie M. And Freida Harper Mills. He was the youngest of four children. He grew up in Winfield and was graduated from Winfield High School in 1959. He received his Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama in 1968. He later became a Certified Public Accountant.
Roger’s first job was in the Accounting Department at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He worked at several accounting firms including Borland and Benefield before opening his own practice in which he worked for over 30 years.
Roger was especially proud of his military service. He was appointed a Reserve commissioned officer of the Army National Guard with the rank of Second Lieutenant in 1968. At one point during his military career, he left his accounting practice and deployed full time with the army to work in Ecuador for a year. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the Army National Guard in August 25, 1993. Roger received the Meritorious Service Medal upon his retirement.
Roger was a lifelong member of Winfield Methodist Church, but he enjoyed attending Independent Presbyterian Church, particularly the Wonder Years class, with his life partner Laurie Haworth. He was very affable and never met a stranger.
Roger was an avid reader and read everything from the classics to the new best sellers. He especially enjoyed reading the biographies of George Washington and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Roger was preceded in death by his sister Sarah Elizabeth Mills and his brother Joe Mills. In addition to Laurie Haworth, he is survived by his sister Wanda Mills Pauling of Fort Collins, Colorado and several nieces. Also, he is survived by a beautiful black cat named Lucky, who was his protector.
Many thanks go to the therapists and nurses of Enhabit Home Health, the nurses and chaplain of Enhabit Hospice, and his nurse Sharrita Williams for the excellent care they provided to Roger.
