Ruth W. Payne

PAYNE, RUTH ELIZABETH WELLS Age 95 passed away peacefully at her home on March 18, 2013. She was a long time resident of Vestavia Hills where she was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Ascension. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Gordon H. Payne; sister, Marie Wells Fredlund; and brother, David A. Wells. She is survived by daughter, Cynthia Wester (Bill) and son, Gordon H. Payne, Jr. (Hope) of Vestavia Hills; granddaughter, Rebecca Lea Wester of Hoover; grandson Derek Payne Wester (Jennifer), and great grandchildren Cole Jacob Wester and Lily Payne Wester, all of Birmingham; much loved nieces and nephews, including special niece Gail Fredlund Chavez (Robert) of Hoover and a host of wonderful friends and neighbors. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Max. Ruth had a servant's heart always putting others before herself. Her favorite pastimes included gardening, cooking, and her Thursday Bridge Club. She was known for her sweet smile, gracious hospitality, and her homemade blueberry bread which she enjoyed sharing with friends. Ruth will best be remembered for her love and devotion to her family who will forever cherish her memory. On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, a graveside service celebrating Ruth's life will be conducted at 2:00 pm at Elmwood Cemetery. The Reverend Stephen Hood is officiating. The family sincerely thanks faithful caregivers Deloris Kindall and Chris Carden as well as Comfort Care Hospice staff and volunteers who together made it possible for Mother to remain in her home during her final years.
