

Sadie Claire Mapes Nice Bingham, age 97, of Mountain Brook, AL died on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. She was born on January 28, 1921 to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Chandler Mapes, Sr. in Birmingham, AL. Sadie Claire graduated from Lula Compton, Ramsey High School and Fairmont College in Washington D.C. She was a member of the 1940-41 Debutant Club and was presented at the 1940 Redstone Ball.. Mrs. Bingham was a charter member and past president of The Birmingham Bar Auxiliary, the John Pake Custis Chapter of the D.A.R., past president of the Mountain Park Garden Club, the Ballerina Club, the Gaieties Club and past President of the Argus Book Club. Mrs. Bingham was a member of St. Marty's on the Highlands Episcopal Church and served as Chairman of the St. Mary's Garden Unit and past Director of the St. Mary's Altar Guild. She was also involved with The Cathedral Church of the Advent. Claire's favorite hobby was painting pet portraits and anything that might interest her at the time. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Charles McKinney Nice, Jr. and John "Jack" Bingham, her son William Averell Harriman Hatch, her brother LDCR George Chandler Mapes, Jr. and a sister Betty Mapes Kilham. Mrs. Bingham is survived by her sister Mary Mapes Cox, her son Peter Adams (Lisa) Nice, her grandson Cayman Adams Nice and a granddaughter Alice Adams Nice. She is also survived by stepsons: John Bingham, Jr., Dr. Williams Chester (Lucy) and Donald Walter Bingham; stepdaughter Jeanie Bingham (Michael) Payne and step-grandchildren: Anne Bingham (Robert) Goodwin, William Wakefield Bingham, Kathleen McDonald Payne, John Alexander (Kendall) Bingham, Michael Denis Payne, Jr. Graham Edward Bingham, Andrew Gilbert Payne, Charles Graham Bingham, Lucy Glenn Bingham and Sarah Grace Bingham. Graveside services will be on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. A Memorial Service will follow at St. Mary's on the Highlands at 11:30 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service.
