Sam Flowers went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on April 8, 2021. Sam was born January 29, 1935 in Demopolis, AL. During high school, Sam enjoyed his love for sports and played varsity football and basketball. After graduating from Demopolis High School in 1954, Sam served his country in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Parks AFB, CA and abroad in Japan as a medical administrator until 1958. After his tour in the military, Sam attended The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and his Master’s Degree in Commerce. In 1963 Sam was hired at Birmingham Trust National Bank (BTNB) and was selected for their Management Training Program. Sam then attended the LSU Graduate Banking School program where he met lifelong friends and began a fulfilling career in banking and investments which lasted almost 60 years. In 1988 Sam was elected to the Board of Directors of SouthTrust Bank and continued employment with the Bank until it was sold. After the sale, Sam transitioned to Synovus Securities with his department and continued to work seamlessly with his friends, co-workers and customers. Sam enjoyed going to work every day and never retired, even at the age of 86. He had a passion for all things, possessed a listening ear, and was always ready to learn about financial market trends. Sam was an active member of the Kiwanis Club serving as President of the Eastwood Chapter and the Birmingham Metro Chapter. Sam was also passionate about giving back to his community, and he remained active in the University of Alabama Alumni Association for many years. As a member of Highlands United Methodist Church, Sam chaired the Board of Trustees for three terms and was a faithful and dedicated attendee of the New Class Sunday School Class. Sam is preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Mildred Kay, and survived by his two children, Leigh Flowers Inskeep and Samuel R. Flowers, Jr. Sam also leaves two grandchildren, Ann Ellis Inskeep and Sarah Catherine Inskeep who fondly knew him as, “Papa” and the great story teller extraordinaire. A special thanks to the compassionate staff at Amedisys Hospice and Accessible Home Health Care for the support and care they all provided at the end of Sam’s life. There will be a visitation at Ridout’s Valley Chapel on Monday, April 12 between 10:00am and 11:00am. A graveside service for family and friends will follow immediately after visitation at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to Highlands United Methodist Church.
