.Sarah Seay Swindle joined her husband James Wiley Swindle, Jr. and her Savior on March 3, 2021. Mrs. Swindle was the daughter of the late Mary Spence Seay and the late Clarence Seay of Mobile. She was also the sister of the late James Seay of Mobile. Survivors include her nieces Anna Wells Benson and her children Henley and Vance of Scottsboro, Jamie Seay and her son Lance Stansberry of McCalla. She also leaves numerous cousins. Mrs. Swindle graduated from Vigor High School in Mobile and East Carolina University. She received a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Alabama. Sarah was employed by the U.S. government in Germany as a teacher and a counselor for dependent children of U.S. Air Force personnel. Upon returning to the U.S., she was employed by the Jefferson County Board of Education for a teaching position at W.A. Berry High School and later at Hoover High School. She was a beloved teacher of 12th grade British literature, grammar, and composition. She was driven to be sure her students were prepared for college. Over the years former students have returned to tell her how well she had prepared them and how much they appreciated her. Mrs. Swindle became an advocate for educators all over the state. She served on the Alabama Education Association (AEA) Board of Directors for several years as a representative of Jefferson County area and ultimately became the chairman of the Board. She was elected state-wide to the position of AEA President. Sarah was on the Alabama Retirement Systems Board of Control for 27 years serving as Chair for nearly 20 years. One of her proudest achievements was that she was on the committee that established PEEHIP, the hospital/medical insurance plan for educators and support personnel. Sarah and her husband Jim were faithful members of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. They taught together an adult Sunday School class for years. It was Sarah's request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church located at 1114 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209. Visitation will be Sunday, March 7 from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood. A graveside service will be held Monday, March 8 at the Alabama National Cemetery located in Montevallo, Alabama at 11:45 a.m. Attendance at the cemetery will be limited. A former student of Mrs. Swindle, Tommy Sanders (Minister to Senior Adults at Dawson) will officiate at the service on Monday. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood.
