Robert H Carlson III, MD went to be with Jesus on December 19, 2020. He was surrounded by his family in his final days. Robert "Bobby" Carlson was born in August 1941 in Birmingham, AL. He graduated from Sewanee Academy. He then attended Washington and Lee University, Birmingham Southern College and received his medical degree from the University of Alabama. After graduation he received a fellowship to study under French geneticist Jerome Lejeune who discovered Trisomy 21. Upon completion of his residency in Denver, CO he took a position in a family practice in Dolores, CO. While in Dolores he and his family cultivated an ardent passion for hunting, fishing, and conservation. He returned to Birmingham, AL to practice Emergency Medicine and started one of the first Urgent Care practices in the state at that time. His career was characterized by a deep compassion for his patients and those in need, particularly in the face of tragedy. He served as a first responder after the attacks of 9/11, setting up triage units at Ground Zero. In 2010, he went to Haiti to deliver care to people after the earthquake. His greatest joys in life were his five children Robert H Carlson IV (Lynnette) of Denver, CO, Eugene K Carlson (Jamie) of Durango, CO, Catherine C Gustavson (Dan) of Durango, CO, Ryan Nathanael Carlson (Jennifer) of Birmingham, AL, Michael Schoettle of Palm Springs, FL, 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. His friends and family loved him dearly and he will be forever missed. He was preceded in death by his father Robert H Carlson, Jr. and his mother Bernice P. Carlson. He is survived by his sister Geraldine Carlson Belt, niece Holly Belt Saunders, nephew Keith T. Belt, Jr. and the love of his life, Carol Nell Seale. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Birmingham, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Children's Diabetes Foundation in Bobby's name.
