Tee Hansford Hiett, Ph.D.

Tee was born in Dora, Alabama. He proudly served in the Navy, then graduated from Auburn University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. His passion for education spurred him on to receive a Master of Science in 1957, from Georgia Institute of Technology.

His work with the U.S.A.I.D. took him, his loving wife Monterey, and infant daughter to El Salvador for two years in the early 1960s, where he helped the University of El Salvador to establish a Department of Industrial Engineering.

By the time he received his Ph.D. in 1972 from Georgia Institute of Technology, his focus and passion had shifted to the nascent field of microcomputers and their integration in hospital management systems.

In 1972, Tee began his long and happy career as a Professor at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), and loved his work with students and faculty in the Department of Administration (HSA), School of Health-related Professions (SHRP). He served as Director of the Master’s program there, as well as a stint as Acting Chairman.

In 1992, he received the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award for the HAS, and developed CD-ROM (and eventually web-based) education materials through which health administration students learned about the application of quantitative methods, especially

statistics and discrete simulation. This project led to a Fellowship from the Fulbright Commission in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Dr. Hiett worked on many other health sciences projects around the world throughout his career, assisting universities in Guatemala, the Republic of Panama, Canada, China, and Saudi Arabia.

In 1995, he became Professor Emeritus at UAB, but continued to work for many years as a consultant for The Children’s Hospital and Kirklin Clinic in Birmingham, and Baptist Health Citizens Hospital in Talladega.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, he received commendations from former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, and Dora Mayor Marion Combs. January 8thwill forever be Dr. Tee

Dr. Hiett loved music and travel, and never stopped learning. He remained curious about the world until the day he passed, and he inspired everyone he met.

Tee is survived by his daughters Lynne Monterey Hutton of Birmingham, Alabama and Deborah Hiett Valenti (Matthew) of Los Angeles, California, and his grandson, Kirby Whitaker Hutton, of Los Angeles, California. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 69

years, Monterey Kirby Hiett.
