He was born in Guntersville, AL on February 15, 1927. After graduating from Marshall County High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and was stationed in Germany during the occupation at the end of the WWII. He then attended North Carolina State University under the GI Bill.
Tom married Irene Mae Gallups in May of 1951. By 1958, they had four children for whom they devoted their lives. Tom and Irene were married for 55 years before her passing in 2007. Tom worked in a variety of jobs until he began his decades long career at Birmingham Electric Battery Co. (BEBCO) as a Diesel Fuel Injection Technician. He retired from BEBCO in 2002 at age 75, and provided unwavering care for Irene in her final years.
Tom served on the Zoning Board for the City of Irondale and at the Irondale Little League Ballpark. He was a devoted husband and loving father, and he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hoover. In addition, he had a passion for cars and for aviation. He earned his private pilot’s license in the 60’s and then flew missions for the Civil Air Patrol.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Mayhall and Lucille Mayhall Gilbreath; his wife, Irene; his sister Mary Ann Kittle; and his grandson Brandon Maurer. He is survived by his children, Cindy (Richard) Borge of Plano, Texas, Becky (Doug) Fremont of Bristow, Virginia, Doug (Monna) Mayhall of Franklin, Tennessee, and Tom (Ann) Mayhall of Hoover, Alabama; his grandchildren, Carrie (Ryan) Braxton, Richard (Liz) Borge, Janna (Nathan) Veenstra, Kimberly (Max) Swarner, Kris Maurer, Lauren (Matt) Allen, Thomas (Rebekah) Fremont, Jackson Mayhall, Laura (Joey) Hoover, and Michelle Mayhall; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. A committal service will occur that afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m., at Gilliam Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, 1351 North Brindlee Mountain Pkwy, Arab, AL 35016.
