Vernon Albert Betsch

Born on May 18, 1933, in Jamestown, North Dakota, Vern was the eldest of four siblings. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Betsch, and is survived by his brother, Eugene Betsch, and sister, Sharon Betsch. From a young age, Vern dedicated his heart and life to serving the Lord, a calling he pursued with unwavering faith.

Vern attended Briercrest Bible College in Saskatchewan, where he met his beloved wife, Elsie Edna Lowen Betsch. United in both marriage and ministry, Vern and Elsie faithfully served the Lord together for 65 years. Together, they were among the founding members of The Navigators, and served as missionaries in Vietnam for 10 years and Indonesia for 4 years. In 1974 , they moved to Birmingham, which served as the family’s home the rest of his and Elsie’s years and where they continued their ministry for as long as they were able. Vern's life was marked by a steadfast commitment to advancing the Kingdom of God and nurturing the spiritual growth of those around him. He was a faithful member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.

A devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and joyful great-grandfather, Vern's legacy of faith lives on in the generations he nurtured. He is survived by his three children: Randy Betsch (wife Cathy), and their daughters Diana and Stephanie; Keith Betsch (wife Lois), and their children Robin, Amanda, Brian, and Kevin; and Gwen Howard (husband Ben), and their children Patrick, Andrew, and Caroline. He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, each a testament to his enduring love and godly example.

Vern’s life was a reflection of Christ’s love- marked by humility, compassion, and unwavering devotion. He shepherded his family with grace, always pointing them to the hope and truth found in Jesus. Though he is deeply missed, we rejoice that he now rests in the presence of the Lord, with Elsie, where there is fullness of joy and peace everlasting.
