Virginia slipped away peacefully at home on December 26, 2021. Born in Birmingham to Emily and Claude Morton on February 16, 1928, she attended area schools until the World War II years, which her family spent at Eglin Air Force base in Florida. Following the war, Virginia was graduated from Auburn University, loving her time on the Plains and serving as President of Kappa Delta. She married Donald William McCormick on February 10, 1951 and raised three very grateful children. She and Don loved to spend time with their family and friends, loved to travel, and celebrated 70 wonderful years of marriage this year. Don and Virginia and family moved from Birmingham to Atlanta, and then Chattanooga, enjoying friends, neighbors, and church families in each city.
She embraced church work and held leadership roles as Deacon, Elder, Guild Chair and Congregational President of Independent Presbyterian Church. Virginia loved people and was a faithful friend to many.
Predeceased by her beloved parents and siblings, Claude Morton, Jr., and Caroline Morton Raughley, Virginia leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Don, his treasured sister, Paula Crockard (Francis), and children, Laura Abney (Richard), Donald McCormick (Cathy), and Gini Williams (Hunter). She was very special to her grandchildren; Emily Anders (Justin), Bill Abney (Heather), Caroline Ornellas (Reese), Annie McCormick, Hunter Williams, and Porter Williams (Katie). She loved time spent with her eight great grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews. The family is thankful for the tender care of Andrea’s Mobile Sitting Services, Daisy James, and Robert Hill.
A private graveside service will be held for family Wednesday, December 29.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue, Birmingham, AL 35205, or the charity of your choice.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsvalleychapel.com for the McCormick family.
