Vita Ross D’Amico, age 89, of Vestavia Hills passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025, after a long illness. Her husband, Frank, stood by her side for almost nine years, providing continuous loving care after her stroke in 2016. He is a great example of honoring the marriage vows through sickness and in health.
She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Paul and Frances Ross and her brother Anthony Paul Ross. Vita is survived by her husband of 69 years, Frank P. D’Amico Jr. and her three children: Frank D’Amico III (Melinda), Angela Melazzo (Frank), and Fran Spina (Paul). Left to treasure her memory are also her grandchildren: Christopher D’Amico (Meredith), Michael D’Amico, Trey Melazzo, David D’Amico (Ally), Stephanie Spina, Paul Joseph Spina IV (Hope), and Ross Spina; great-grandchildren: Mary Rose and Anna Lacey D’Amico and David Asher D’Amico.
Vita was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. She attended St. Paul’s Elementary and graduated from John Carroll High School in 1953 with fond memories that lasted a lifetime.
Vita and Frank were married at St. Mark’s Catholic Church on April 20, 1955. She was a devout Catholic that treasured her faith in God. She was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, where she was a member of St. Anne’s Guild and a Committed Adorer in the Chapel of Our Savior until her illness. She founded the Mary Queen of Peace Prayer Group in 1987, and one of her most cherished memories was a religious pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, that same year.
Vita loved her family, especially her grandchildren, friends, and trips to the beach. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Southern Care New Beacon Hospice and “B and J Cares for You”: Barbara, Adrian, Deborah, and Yonnie for all their excellent care, love, and kindness.
Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church on Thursday, February 20th at 11am with a funeral mass to follow at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1728 Oxmoor Road, 35209, St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 2061 Patton Chapel Road, 35226, or Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, 3222 County Road 548, Hanceville, AL 35077.
