Walter Gay Pittman was a larger than life personality who leaves behind so many happy memories. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed. He loved to talk and tell stories and it is with profound gratitude that we share Walter Gay’s memory with you in his own words.
I was delivered by my grandfather, Dr. C.P. Gay on January 26, 1937 at his home in Geneva, Alabama. Most of my cousins were delivered by my grandfather due to the Great Depression. The first 18 months of my life were spent in Enterprise, Alabama. My family moved to Geneva, Alabama when my parents, Nell Gay and Oscar Lee Pittman started the Pittman Funeral Home. While living above the funeral home, I attended the Geneva City School system and had a “Mayberry Childhood”.
During my later years in high school, I was a correspondent for the Dothan Eagle and the Montgomery Advisor and published local information stories and obituaries.
In 1955 I attended the University of Alabama. I was active in Sigma Nu fraternity and was elected Commander (President). My junior year I received an award for outstanding Junior ROTC and was listed in Who’s Who my senior year.
Post graduate work was completed at Birmingham Southern College and the Medical College at Alabama in Birmingham, which is now known as UAB. After graduation, I returned to the Wiregrass and was in family practice in Headland, Alabama. Returning to Birmingham, I completed my residency in Urology. I practiced at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield, Alabama as a board certified urologist until the hospital sold and closed. After my employment with Urology Centers of Alabama as the Director of Clinical Research, I retired after 50 years in the medical profession.
I was a founding member of UAB Alumni and was president for two years. I was also an early member of Operation New Birmingham.
To honor my love for the University of Alabama, I served on the Arts & Science Leadership Board for 13 years and was the chairman from 2016-2018.
I was married for 51 years to Margaret Adams from Anniston, Alabama. She was survived by a son Walt Pittman (Liz), granddaughter Jennifer Britton (Rip) and two great grandchildren, Olivia and Matthew.
After the death of Margaret, I married Helen Crow Mills in 2012. My new loving family includes Carolyn Mills, John Goode Price, Blake Crow and many cousins. Also, survived by my sister, Anita Crabtree and her children and grandchildren.
