Wayne Worden Killion, III, age 45, of Mountain Brook, died on April 2, 2024, surrounded with loving support from his family and close friends. Since early 2020, Wayne battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Upon his diagnosis, he readily agreed to participate in clinical trials to further the development of medications to slow down, reverse, and prevent the disease.
Wayne was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Wayne Worden Killion, Jr; his paternal grandfather, Wayne Worden Killion, Sr.; and maternal grandparents, Renata and Charles Reever. Born in Mobile, AL, Wayne was raised in Birmingham, AL, and attended Mountain Brook City Schools. Following his father’s example, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Wayne received a Bachelor of Science in Management from the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. After college, Wayne worked as a legal assistant at King & Spalding, LLP, in Washington, DC, for several years prior to earning his law degree from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. At Lewis & Clark, Wayne received a Business Law Scholarship, served on the Lewis & Clark Law Review, and was selected to be a Law Clerk in the Power Division of the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland, OR.
In 2008, Wayne began his legal career with The Shaw Group as in-house counsel in Stoughton, MA, and Charlotte, NC, for Shaw’s Power Division. He gained international experience supporting projects in the UK, Europe, and Central and South America. Wayne later worked as in-house counsel for the Power and Plant Services Division at CB&I, Inc. In 2015, Wayne was named General Counsel at Brown & Root Industrial Services in Baton Rouge, LA. Following the progression of his ALS, he was named Executive Vice President of Legal Services at Brown & Root in 2021.
Those who knew Wayne will remember his keen intellect, sense of humor, and love of Lake Martin and Alabama athletics. Wayne loved adventure. Whether he was crisscrossing the country in his RV or on his motorcycle, traveling with friends to attend NASCAR races or to see live music, Wayne was always on the move. He had a deep love for his family, friends from across the country, colleagues with whom he worked closely with for 16 years, and of course his faithful, ever present, English bulldog Rooney. His family is very appreciative of Chad Payne, Chris Williams, and Faticia Garret for their loving care of Wayne during his illness.
Wayne is survived by his mother, Sandra Reever Killion; his brothers, Charles David Killion (Katy) and Cooper Reever Killion (Ashley); and his paternal grandmother, Christine Cooper Killion. He will be greatly missed by his beloved nieces and nephews, whom he adored: Anna Kathryn Killion, Joseph David Killion, Caroline Christine Killion, Clayton Michael Killion, and Christine Sandra Killion.
A celebration of life will be held at Canterbury United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 11, at 11:00am. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and support during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wayne’s memory can be made to The Wayne Killion Family Designated Fund for ALS Research at UAB (UAB Gift Records, AB 1230, 1720 2nd Ave. South, Birmingham, AL 35294) or to the ALS Association of Alabama’s Home Modification Program.
