Bill graduated from Auburn University where he was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was a longtime resident of Homewood and a faithful member of Homewood Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Bill lived a life of public service. He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 and became a police officer for the City of Homewood in 1965. Bill retired as Chief of Police from the Homewood Police Department in 1994. He was a member of the Alabama Woodturners Association, Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Homewood Pistol Team, Metro Criminal Justice Executive Association and a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
Bill is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Billye Morrell Shirley West. He is survived by his daughters Julia West Copus (Bob) and Margaret West Weems (Mike); grandchildren Laura Weems Tull (Bryan), Allison Marie Copus and John Steven Copus; great grandchildren Avery Elizabeth Tull and Griffin Gray Tull.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 13, 2018 beginning at 10 a.m. with the funeral service following at 12 noon at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, AL. Graveside services with Police Honors will follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
