
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Winn Johnson and Katherine Ward Johnson. He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years Mary Murphy (Chay) Johnson; his son William Frank Johnson, Jr., Raleigh, NC, and his daughter Julia Johnson Hudson, Birmingham; two grandchildren, Mary Murphy Hudson and William Winn Hudson; his three siblings, Walter Winn Johnson, Jr., Wetumpka, Jane Johnson Bishop, Jacksonville, FL, and Jean Johnson Causey, Wetumpka.
Bill graduated from AG Parrish High School in Selma, Al. He attended the University of Alabama where he received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration. While at the university he joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity and met Chay, the love of his life. Bill's career started with 25 years in the apparel business and then 20 years with Potlatch Corporation in manufacturing and paper board sales, retiring as Director of Sales.
Bill helped build 23 Habitat Homes while a member of Germantown United Methodist Church in Tennessee where he lived for 19 years. He moved to Birmingham in 2008 to be with his beloved grandchildren. He was recently voted Volunteer of the Year at Habitat Restore in Irondale where he volunteered. He was an active member of Mountain Brook Community Church and the Builders' Community Group.
A visitation will be held Monday, December 8, 2014 5-7 at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood. A private graveside service will proceed memorial services which will be held at 11:30 AM, Day, December 9, 2014, at Mountain Brook Community Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to MBCC Building Fund, 3001 U.S. 280 E, Mountain Brook, Al 35243 or Habitat for Humanity Greater Birmingham (www.habitatbirmingham.org).
