A native of Detroit, Michigan, Tony was born on September 20, 1940, to Anthony and Angeline (Holota) Gutowski, one of four children. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1963.
In 1973, Tony moved from Detroit to Plymouth, Michigan, where he lived until 1997 before settling in Homosassa. He retired from Ameritech after a successful career in management. While living in Michigan, Tony was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Civitan Club, dedicating much of his time to community service. After moving to Florida, he became a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Homosassa, where his faith and friendships remained an important part of his life.
Tony cherished time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was especially proud of his grandson, Talon, who recently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. An avid fisherman, Tony loved boating the Homosassa River and the Gulf flats. He also enjoyed tinkering with cars—especially old Volkswagens—and anything mechanical, from motors to gadgets to the watches he’d find around town. A Master Gardener, Tony found peace and purpose in his garden, sharing his plants and knowledge with others.
His perfect day would begin with family, continue with a fishing trip alongside his grandkids and friends, include a good catch of grouper or sea trout and lunch at Margaritaville, a stop at a flea market or roadside yard sale, and end poolside at home—grilling steaks with loved ones and relaxing with a classic movie. The Godfather trilogy and Grand Prix (James Garner, 1966) were among his favorites.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, William Ogger and Delores Spencer. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Gutowski of Homosassa; two children, Catherine Gasper (Steven) of Chippewa Lake, Ohio, and Michael Gutowski (Kelly) of Tampa, Florida; four grandchildren, Talon and Aubree Gasper of Chippewa Lake, and Grant and Emily Gutowski of Tampa; his sister, Barbara Fettes (Charles) of Homosassa; and his beloved dog, Daisy.
A Mass of Christian Burial with Military Honors will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Homosassa at a later date.
Services are entrusted to Macrini-Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa.
