

George Roland McElvy, 97, of Homosassa, FL, passed away on Sun., April 26, 2026 at Tampa General Hospital Crystal, Crystal River, FL. A native of Chicago, IL, he was born Sept. 14, 1928 to Thomas and Helen (Wood) McElvy, one of two children. George served his country honorably and proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War, specifically in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. Mr. McElvy earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Florida and then enjoyed a long career as the owner of his own architectural design form; originally McElvy, Jennewein, Stefany & Howard, which later became known as Design Arts. George grew up in Tampa, Florida and along with his loving wife of 57 years, Jewel McElvy, affectionately known as “Bear”, purchased a home in Crystal River, then relocated to Homosassa in 2015. George and Jewel were faithful and devoted members of First United Methodist Church of Homosassa. George was involved in numerous clubs and organizations, and served on the Board of Directors of many of them, including several banking institutions. Some of the organizations that he was devoted to are American Institute of Architects, Kiwanis International, Rotary Club, Junior League of Tampa Community Advisory Board, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, Marine Fisheries Commission, Tampa Yacht and Country Club, Korean War Veterans Association of Citrus County (Chapter #192), Phi Delta Theta, University of Florida, Florida State Board of Architecture, Gargoyle Honorary Fraternity College of Architecture and the Tampa Chamber of Commerce. George had many passions and interests, including collecting electric trains, Ham radio operating, fishing, boating, sailing, snow skiing, hunting, playing the piano and bass fiddle, and completing home improvements and projects. George liked building things, painting and drawing, camping and traveling. He enjoyed and treasured many deep friendships (some spanning many years). Above all, George loved his family; he always preached “Keep the family together”; his perfect day would be to be surrounded by as many family members as he could gather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Babs McElvy, as well as a son-in-law, Jim Klimschot. George is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jewel McElvy, Homosassa, FL; daughters Sherilynn McElvy (Subir Mukerjea), Cincinnati, OH and Judy Klimschot, Omaha, NE; grandchildren Alyson Brown (Levi), Bend OR; Joseph Klimschot, Chicago, IL and Jill Klimschot, Omaha, NE and great grandchildren Wolf and Orin Brown, Bend, OR. A Celebration of Life with Military Honors will be held on Fri., July 24, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church of Homosassa, 8831 W. Bradshaw St., Homosassa, FL 34448.
