

Dr. James Edwin Newman, 93, of Homosassa, Florida was born on February 19, 1919 in Huntington, West Virginia and died on February 5, 2013 of natural causes. He was the husband of Betty Oliver Newman and the son of the late Edgar Preston and Lenora Lewis Newman. His ancestors were among the first 50 families to settle in the Big Sandy River Area of Wayne County, West Virginia.
He was a graduate of Huntington High School in Huntington, WV, received a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University, Huntington, WV in 1942, and a D.D.S. degree from the University of Maryland in 1946. He served two years in the United States Army Dental Corps before returning to Huntington, WV where he practiced for 46 years.
During his dental career, he served as President of the Huntington, WV Dental Society and
President of the West Virginia State Dental Association. He participated as a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the Academy of Operative Dentistry. He served as Treasurer of the Academy of Gold Foil Operators and co-founded the George M Hollenback Dental Study Club. He served two terms on the West Virginia Governor’s Advisory Committee for Comprehensive Health Planning.
In Florida, he enjoyed genealogical research and was an avid golfer. He was a member of Sugarmill Woods Country Club where he belonged to the Men's Golf Association and the Dapper Duffers. In Huntington, he was a member of Johnson Memorial Methodist Church, Huntington Rotary Club, Huntington Chamber of Commerce, and Guyan Golf and Country Club. Above all, he took his greatest interest, pride and joy in his family.
In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by two daughters, Anne Bushnell (wife of David) of Lancaster, PA and Nancy Charter (wife of Richard) of Kerrville, TX and a son Dr. James Edwin, Jr. (husband of Barbara) of Orting, WA; 7 grandchildren Sarah Bushnell Kapp (wife of Gregory) of Merrimack, NH, Nathan Bushnell (husband of Cortney) of Mountville, PA, Gregory Charter of Dallas, TX, Marc Charter (husband of Kristin) of Midland, TX, Kimberly Charter of Dallas, Jay and Eric Newman both of Orting, WA; and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, Mary Jo Lowe (wife of Riley) of Hurricane, WV, 2 step-granddaughters Stephanie Duncan (wife of Jason) of Nitro, WV and Natalie Elkins (wife of Jeff) of Hurricane, WV and their daughter Riley. He is preceded in death by his brother Keith Lewis Newman.
The memorial service will be held at a later date. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers of Cypress Cove Care Center in Crystal River for the care given to him during his stay there.
