Mamie Lou Averman, 96, of Homosassa, FL passed away peacefully on March 15, 2021. She was born on May 6, 1924 in Greenville, SC, the oldest of seven children of the late Furman and Annie McLean Stockton.
Lou grew up on a farm and excelled at cooking, gardening, and sewing. She was an accomplished seamstress and in the early 60’s, became a buyer for Sears Fashions in Miami. It was there in 1961 that she met Bud Averman, her husband of 45 years. They wed in Grace Lutheran Church of Miami Springs in June, 1961. The lived in South Florida for several years, where Bud was a builder and an airline captain. In 1968, when Bud transferred to Atlanta, GA, they established the “B & L Ranch” in Barnesville, Ga. Given Lou’s background on a farm, they successfully raised Black Angus cattle. In 1975 Lou’s niece, Jan Stockton, came to live with them to finish her schooling and to help out on the farm. In 1976, in order to expand their operations, they moved the “B & L Ranch” to Uniontown, AL, to grow soybeans and continue the cattle operations. Lou was an active member of the local Garden Clubs in both locations. During the 1970s, Lou’s love of animals became apparent when she trained and showed Doberman Pinchers, winning several awards.
After they retired in 1982, they moved to Homosassa, FL, where they took up golf and traveling. Lou excelled at golf and, on at least one occasion, received an award for a “hole-in-one” for her accomplishment. They travelled extensively to Europe, the Far East, Alaska, and the Caribbean, frequently accompanied by Lou’s stepdaughters (Barbara and Linda). Lou was a wonderful stepmother for 60 years and is survived by her stepchildren Skip Averman (Annandale, VA), Barbara Harris (Las Vegas, NV), Larry (Brenda) Averman (Richmond, VA) and Linda Averman (Las Vegas, NV). She is also survived by her niece, Jan (Paul) Farrow and close friend, Marlene Lemro, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lou was a very special person and will always be remembered for her friendliness and kindness to everyone she met. She will be missed.
Funeral service for Lou will be 10:30 AM on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa, FL. Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lou’s memory to Vitas Health Care, P.O. Box 1330, Lecanto, FL 34460.
