Merton R. "Mert" Davis

Merton Roy Davis, 79, of Homosassa, FL and formerly of Essex Junction, VT, passed gracefully on his beloved wife’s birthday of May 18th. Mert, as he was known to many, was born August 18, 1935 to Roy and Florence (Ruggles) Davis, one of two children. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Homosassa, FL and is survived by daughters Debra Lang and Susan Valentine, both residing in Essex Junction, VT and grandchildren Chloe and Justin Lang and Nicolas Coons; son-in-law John Lang and special friend Gene Nelson. Merton was predeceased by his loving wife of 51 years, Marjorie Davis, and his sister Winnona (Davis) Patch. Mr. Davis graduated from Johnson High School, Johnson, VT (Class of 1953) and proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for eight years. He graduated with honors from the Aircraft and Engine Tech School and was assigned to the 331st Fighter Group at the 26th Air Division Headquarters, where he became jet aircraft crew chief and master mechanic and instructor. As a civilian, Merton was employed by IBM Corp. for over 30 years, where he held various positions in semiconductor manufacturing, engineering and management at Manassas, VA and Burlington, VT. Merton was active in Boy and Girl Scouts, Pigtail and Ponytail softball leagues, and always supported his daughters’ youth activities. He enjoyed woodworking, stained glass, golf, hunting and fishing, and all outdoor activities. Most of all, he enjoyed camping and traveling with the family. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years. A Memorial Service of Remembrance will take place at the First United Methodist Church of Homosassa, 8831 W. Bradshaw St., Homosassa, FL 34446 on Thursday, May 26, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Kip Younger officiating. For friends and family in Vermont, a ceremony there will be announced at a later date.
