Walter F. “Wally” Romanow, 98, of Homosassa, FL, passed away on Tues., March 13, 2018 at HPH Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, FL. A native of Detroit, MI, he was born Dec. 18, 1919 to William and Anna (Czuli) Romanow, one of two children. Wally, as he was known to many, honorably and proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a Carpenter’s Mate Third Class Petty Officer. He served aboard the attack transport vessel USS Ormsby (APA-49) and his duties included the maintenance and repair of the Higgins boats assigned to the Ormsby, also known as the LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel), which brought U.S. Marines and Allied Forces into enemy territories. Wally fought in both the Battle of Peleliu and the Battle of Leyte in the performance of his duties. Later in his life he became an entrepreneur, owning and operating The Boardwalk, an upscale restaurant and supper club in Dearborn Heights, MI. Mr. Romanow moved to Homosassa over 20 years ago from Woodstock, GA and was of the United Church of Christ faith. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret D. Romanow, Homosassa, FL; stepsons Leland Rosenberger (wife Sandra), Eaton, MI and Rev. Dale Brian Rosenberger (wife Cecile), Darien, CT; nephew James Romanow (wife Juila) of Utah; grandchildren Emelia, Steven, Lise and Greta, as well as great grandchildren Alexandra, Joseph, Ruby and Mei Li. In addition to his parents, Wally was preceded in death by his brother, James Romanow. Friends will be received on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa, FL, where a chapel service will take place at 11:00 A.M.
