Alice Alexandra Komine

BORN: July 27, 1935 @ home, Honolulu, HI

PASSED: July 28, 2026 @ Hale Nani Rehab

Alice was born at home, way up in Kalihi Uka, near Kilohana ridge, in an area so remote that it is not accessible today. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor the government restricted access because of its military installations in this critical location.

So the family moved to the infamous VIOLET ST address where Alice lived with her parents & siblings, and then returned later in life with her beloved Howard, and lived the last 52 years.

She was married to Howard Komine, from Hilo, who passed on December 31, 1997. Howard attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Hilo High, he was a true blue Viking!

They raised two (2) children together:

Katherine Debra & Howard Kelly.

They were blessed with five (5) grandchildren:

Kawehi, Britton, Ha’aheo, Kaimana & Jordyn-Kanoa;

14 great-grands &

1 great-great-granddaughter.

2 of which are her namesakes:

BURTON ALEXANDER “HA’AHEO” &

ALEXA-ROSE “KILINOE”.

Alice Alexandra was named after her paternal grandmother, Alejandrina who everyone knew as Lita Alice.

She was the eldest child of Manuel & Jennie Rondon Lopez.

She was like a 2nd mom to her 10 siblings; here are their names in birth order, from oldest to youngest:.

Alice worked for the Tengan-Tamashiro family business in their many restaurants in Honolulu and Kaua’I, as a waitress & sometimes cook. She became like a daughter to them.

In later years, she became a nanny and was “Grandma Alice” to many keiki, being the loving “grandma” when young moms had to return to work after maternity leave. It gave them peace of mind leaving their precious ones in her loving care.

Alice had a joyful & kind spirit that was infectious. She was the most loving and hospitable person to everyone. Always with a beaming smile on her face she would warmly greet everyone she sees (friend or strangers alike).

She was beautiful inside & out!

A true Angel!

Everyone just loved her & loved being around her!

She came from a long line of jokesters, so she loved to laugh, sing and dance. Especially at her favorite dancing spot called “AYALA’S”, in her youth.

She was the ultimate hostess, her grace & hospitality were unmatched! Especially to all our Big Island ‘ohana, who would ALWAYS stay with Howard & Alice at the “Kalihi Hilton” (Komine’s house) even if they had other options! It was because of her warm personality & good cooking (esp.her gandule rice)! There’s even a sign that Howard made saying “Kalihi Hilton”.

She grew up attending Our Lady of Mount Church, like generations before her. Frequently visiting Our Lady’s Grotto for a quiet moment & prayer.

She attended Kalihi Uka Elementary, Kalakaua Intermediate & was a proud “Governor” of Farrington High School, Class of ’54. And was happy to sing her alma mater at the drop of a hat. You could hear her belt it out…

“To you our own dear Alma Mater…”

As a mom, you couldn’t ask for more…she was THE BEST…she let the kids get away with things they probably shouldn't have been doing…but was always there… at the paddling regattas with her famous ‘musubis’, & the grandkids’football/basketball/volleyball games & great-grandbabies soccer, football, basketball & other events.

As a big sis, she was adored by her siblings. She was like a 2nd mother to them all. They loved her dearly and looked up to her with such admiration.

As an aunty and friend she was the ultimate!

Her dearest friends became her sisters and their kids were like her own.

She cherished her nieces & nephews, and her grandnieces and grandnephews. Who, until the end,continued to check on her …they would bring her fresh cut flowers from their yard & all kinds of goodies….always!

She loved her goodies, especially if they were chocolate or lemon flavored!!

Such a SPECIAL, SPECIAL lady, loved by all…spunky, sassy, strong, selfless!

SHE TAUGHT US ALL BY HER ACTIONS, NOT SO MUCH HER WORDS…

about love & kindness, grace, forgiveness, loyalty, perseverance, grit & generosity.

Her famous last words were …“BE NICE!”
