

A 1933 graduate of the Kamehameha School for Girls and a 1936 graduate of the Fashion Arts School of San Francisco, California; she also attended the University of Hawaii studying art. An independent dress maker and fashion couturier in Honolulu from 1936 to 1963, with her own label of "Kalani", she created one of a kind Hawaiian formal wear and Holoku with her designs, often winning awards at the Holoku Balls of the 1950's. A resident of Kailua-Kona since 1963, she was the longtime manager of the Kona Banyan Court and a former docent and keeper of collections at Hulihe'e Palace. Member of Kawaiaha`o Church, Daughters of Hawai`i, Aha Hui Ka`ahumanu, Kona Hawaiian Civic Club and Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna.
Survived by a loving `ohana of numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, including Ihilani Burgess Chun Staton, Judith Maile Burgess, Emily Ulu Burgess Matsumoto, Kaliko Chun, William Lota Burgess, Francis Burgess, Reynard Burgess, Rodney K. Burgess III, Kamana Seymour and caregiver Panana Alden.
Memorial Service at Kawaiaha`o Church on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Visitation at 9:45 a.m., service at 11 a.m. and burial at 1:00 p.m. at O`ahu Cemetery. Reception to follow at Hanaiakamalama (Queen Emma Summer Palace), aloha attire. Celebration of Life at Hulihe`e Palace in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m., aloha attire.
