Born from humble beginnings, Arturo lived a life defined by perseverance, faith and quiet strength. Through determination and hard work, he earned admission to the prestigious Catholic University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines, where he sustained high honors completing his medical education—a milestone that reflected both his discipline and his deep commitment to excellence.
Following medical school, he began his career as a rural physician, providing care to underserved communities with compassion and dedication. Recognizing his promise and commitment, he was given the opportunity to complete his residency in Honolulu, Hawaii. What began as chance to further his horizons soon became something more lasting—he chose to make Honolulu his home. Following his residency, with a young family by his side, Arturo was awarded a prestigious fellowship to the University of Tennessee in Memphis, where he pursued advanced education in clinical and anatomical sciences. After completing the two-year program, he returned home to Honolulu, where he ultimately discovered his true professional calling in medicine specializing in pathology.
Dr. Salcedo served for many years as Chief Pathologist at Wahiawa General Hospital, where his expertise, integrity and sound judgment earned the deep respect of colleagues and hospital staff alike. He later continued his distinguished career at Castle Memorial Hospital, remaining an important and valued presence within Hawaii’s medical community. Among his many accomplishments, a defining achievement was his role as one of the founding partners establishing Pathology Associates. In partnership with his trusted colleagues, the organization grew to become the largest private laboratory network serving all the islands of Hawaii, while also supporting out-of-state clients through its comprehensive diagnostic testing services. This practice helped lay the foundation for the growth of independent diagnostic laboratories throughout the islands—a lasting contribution that quietly shaped the future of medical diagnostics in the state. With a gracious character and an unwavering desire to serve others, Dr. Salcedo semi-retired at the age of 75, yet continued working as a Pathologist in Honolulu at Kuakini and Kaiser Permanente Hospitals until he fully retired at the age of 85 in 1999.
Yet for all of his professional accomplishments, Arturo’s utmost pride and joy was always his family. It was in Honolulu that he built the foundation of his personal life, meeting his wife, Dolores, and starting a family that would become his greatest treasure. He shared nearly sixty devoted years of marriage with his dearest Dolores, who predeceased him in June 2015. He is tenderly remembered by his daughters, Aurora (Campton) Mock and Victoria Salcedo; his cherished grandchildren, Ashley (David) Trang, Chasen (Karrina) Mock, and Makena Spiller; and his six much loved great-grandsons, Ikaika, Kaleo, Nakoa (Trang), Keahi, Kekoa, and Kai (Mock). Nothing brought him greater joy than gathering with his family, witnessing the growth of each new generation, and offering his steady presence, wise counsel, and gentle smile.
Arturo carried within him a quiet and unwavering trust in God that shaped the course of his 101 remarkable years. His faith was not proclaimed in loud words or grand displays, but lived gently and faithfully each day—through whispered prayers, humble service, and a heart full of gratitude. It was the steady rhythm of his life, guiding him with grace through every season. In his humility, strength, and steadfast devotion, Arturo leaves behind a legacy far greater than his years—a living testament of faith and purpose that continues to shine in the lives of all who were blessed to know and love him.
