Grandma, you will be dearly missed. Although I didn't get to come around that much, it was always nice to talk story with you when I did. And now that you aren't here in body, I wish that I could have one more day to sit down and hear your laugh again. I'm so thankful I was able to bring May and Mikela over that one day and hang out with you and Grandpa, catching up and talking story. I know your spirit lives on and watches over our ohana. I love you Grandma. Rest in Aloha.

Thinking about you today mom. Oh how I miss hearing your cute Chinese accented voice. I gotta admit it's been tough these last couple days. I guess the realization of me not physically seeing and talking to you is finally kicking in. As for dad, I know you're with him always and proud of him. No words can express how much I love and miss my Mom.  God truly has blessed me with the most awesome mother any child could ever ask for.
Mom instilled in me strong values and the importance  of family, kindness, love and respect.  I remember her always telling me  to respect my elders, even if it was my 4 older brothers.  I believe that this made me what I am today.
This year would have been mom and dad's (Donald Bartley) 50th wedding anniversary.  I believe that mom found her soulmate and want to thank dad for giving mom the love and happiness she so well deserved.  Love you dad!
This was the first holiday without mom and it was really hard not having her here but what comforts me is, if god willing, I will be with her again someday.
I will forever treasure all the times spent with mom especially on all our trips.  She loved to travel, especially to Vegas.  I would always try to accompany them whenever I could because these were those special moments that I could have with her.
I miss her smile, her laugh, her love, and even her lectures.  
Thanks mom for being my mom and that special person in my life!

Barbara (wife, best friend, companion, and one individual you could confide in). We were together for over fifty years and all I can say it wasn't enough. You made me the happiest guy on this earth. It didn't matter weather we were going to the tennis court, or planning a trip to Vegas, or to the Orient I knew you were there to help. You were the best cook in Hawaii or the rest of the country. You loved a clean house and neatness was your middle name. On the tennis court you were a real tiger not letting any ball pass you (something like a back board).You loved you Ma Jong, Video Poker, Horse racing and the different penny games in Las Vegas. You always had a smile and a good things to say about everyone you met. You loved your Chinese opera tapes and all your Chinese was coming back. I miss having you around and calling me goofy or if I didn't answer quickly or paying attention you would say you who. I love and miss my honey bun.

Kung Hee Fat Choy Grandma! Not a day goes by that we don't think about you and know that we were truly blessed to have you in our lives. We miss the way that you would always greet us with "Hi dear," and leave us with "Bye dear" in your unique and special way. We are so happy that we got to live right below you so we could see you more often. Even our baby girl Chelsea, who is in heaven with you now, would always run to look for you whenever she got out of the house. Dogs know!! As for me, I know I will never find gao, saimin, or almond cookies as good as yours. We could go on and on about how much you mean to us Grandma, but honestly words cannot express how much you are loved. We will see you again. Rest in love...

Mom, what can I say!  You have made me the person that I am today and I hope that you are very happy that I turned out the way I did.  Your influence in my life was unending.  I was so happy that I could spend all that time with you and Dad on your annual trips.  Those memories will be cherished forever.  Whenever I go anywhere in this world, I can say that you are there looking out for me in spirit and I know that you are my guardian angel.  

Dad is still making sure that your legacy lives on and is making sure that we do not forget the things that you wanted for us and is taking good care of us.  God willing, we will all be together again!  I love you so much and I miss you so much but I will be strong because I know that you would want me to.......LOVE YOU MOM!

Mom, what can I say. Growing up you showed me everything that I now know. Without your love and guidance I would not be the person that I am now. You taught me to cook for the family, to clean the house, make everyone bed and to pick up after everyone. You also showed me how to iron your clothes while you get ready for work. You will always be in my heart. I miss you so much that it hurts. You also taught me how to love unconditionally. Whenever anything bad happened we could always go to you and you will always show us the silver lining to life. You will always give a thousand percent to us kids.I can still see you sitting in the doorway of the bathroom while I threw up all night because of something I may have eaten and calming us while you take care of our bloody cuts and sprains. All that I am is because of you and what you taught us growing up. Thank you for being my mother. I couldn't have asked for a better mother. Your unwavering love for us while we were growing up will always be with me and I just hope that I can give to my family what you gave to us. I love you mom!

I can honestly say God could not have blessed me with a better gramma than you. No matter what, wether it was physically or not, you were always there for me. From the family trips we would take from Disneyland, to Lego land, to knotts berry farm, to universal, to Vegas you always showed us the best time ever. Spoiling your grandchildren getting us whatever we asked for and never complaining although sometimes we may not have deserved it. I'll always remember all the great memories I have with you. Thank you for pushing me and helping me grow as a person. I love you gramma always!

Mom thank you for showing all of us how to love. That love shows in the faces of your kids, your grandkids and now your great grandkids. Your love touched so many people's lives. I've been blessed beyond measure to have you have as a grandma. I truly believe we got stationed in Hawaii just so I could get to spend time with you before you left this world, and for that I am so lucky and grateful! Thank you for all the amazing memories that have been created because of you and grandpa from Disneyland to Vegas. Thank you for you sharing you wisdom and love. For pushing me and Believing in me. Time is often measured by how long we have known someone. For as long as I had known Ma Bartley it was not long enough.  Her presences always made everyone comfortable as she had touched us all with her smile and kindness.  Now in her absence she is still remembered by our memories as she quietly continues to Touch Us All

This is one of the hardest things I believe I have ever had to do.  I was up most of the night, every night, thinking "Are there any words good enough to speak of our Beloved Mother and Wife of our father, Barbara Siu Lan Bartley."
Today, we are gathered here for her Celebration of Life and to honor her.  And we truly feel that this is not a funeral but a celebration of her life, the accomplishments and the Aloha that she has spread to everyone that she has ever come into contact with.  We thank everyone who has attended in Barbara's memory and we thank everyone that has given us their heartfelt condolences because they could not be in attendance.
She would have been overwhelmed by all of the beautiful flowers.  She also would have been overwhelmed by the fascinating Taoist ceremony and she would have been proud of the beautiful photos that her husband and her children have shared with everyone.  Most of all she would have been overwhelmed by all the love of her family and all the love from the many friends that are here today to join in for Barbara's Celebration of Life.
Mom loved life and lived each day to its fullest.  She always danced to her own step (In fact mom also loved to dance).  Mom fought her illness harder and more courageous than anyone I have ever known.  That fight sadly ended during the afternoon of October 27, 2015.  Our mom is such an irreplaceable person and I cannot think of anyone else that can take her place and we adored her.

History:
Mom was born sometime in the early 1900's in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii.  Her father was Kun Wai Chun and her mother was Violet Mew.  At the age of 9, my mom traveled back to China to take care of her little sister, Sally.  She survived the Japan/China wars and came back to Honolulu at the age of 16 and continued to grow up here with the rest of her family, Peggy, Gloria, Sally, Raymond and Devona.  During those early years Mom worked at the Lau Yee Chai, Coral Reef, Trader Vics, Golden Duck, and the Hong Kung restaurants as either a hostess or cashier.  She was tireless as she worked in the Restaurant Industry for so many years of her life.  She worked along-side many people here in Hawaii and also in Chicago.

Memories:
Being the humble person she was I feel she would be amazed by the amount of tears, sadness and tremendous loss we feel here today.  She brought true joy into the life of anyone she met whether it was during good times or bad times.  Her life was not always a walk in the park but she coped, adjusted and moved on like the remarkable person she is.
Mom always knew the true meaning of "Family" and her most precious gift to us was the unconditional love and support she displayed to us.  Mom was constantly inspiring and helped others, always with a smile on her face. 

Most important to her was her precious family, and friends.  She was a proud woman with a lot of integrity, gentleness, forgiveness and strength right up to the end of her life here on earth.
No matter how bad a situation she would always find words to make you feel a little better.  In fact, no matter how bad the situation was for her, she would always look at the good side of things and never make an issue of things.
Mom touched hundreds, no thousands, of people.  Mom was a fun loving person that brightened our lives and everyone else's lives with her infectious smile and grace.  If you close your eyes and look back, I'll bet you that the last time you saw my mom, Barbara; she would have a smile on her face.  She had an infectious smile and a cute laugh, a great style, a wonderful wit, and a generosity like no other.   In fact that infectious smile was always present in every picture that she took.  A surprise visit, no, in fact any visit from her children, grandchildren, relatives or friends would light up her face with that infectious smile.  
I know my mom wasn't prepared for something like this and our family wasn't prepared as well.  GOD has His own special plan for her and we know for sure and in our hearts that mom, Barbara, would even bring a smile to everyone in heaven.  We may not understand God's will, but that's how the cycle of life works.  Life is surely full of mysteries.
We are confident that our mother, Barbara, is now with our creator. She will be in our hearts forever.  We thank you mother for allowing us to be a part of your life's journey and it has been our privilege to be your children.  We never really had to worry because mom worried more than enough for all of us.  Mom deeply loved and was very proud of her children, Walter, Randy, Robert, JoAnn, Donnie and myself.
Mom also loved and adored her husband, Don.  If you saw all of the pictures that they were in, you could see that they were a couple made in heaven and that they truly adored each other.  It was very evident in the smile on their faces and their displays of affection and by always holding hands.
Her husband, Don, my dad, was the love of her life for the past 50 years.  They did everything together and they were like Ying and Yang and their universe would be in sync as long as they would be together.  May God bless you dad and grant you comfort during these rough times, and dad, you will be comforted in the fact that mom will always be with you.
Some of mom's favorite things were dancing, crossword puzzles, electronic games, Chinese opera music, gardening, mahjong, Las Vegas, tennis and keeping my dad in check.  

Her signature style was her tennis garb and stylish hats, the jade jewelry, the bracelets and the huge wedding ring that my dad gave to her.  
Mom started to play tennis during the early eighties and was taught by a Tennis Pro who was a family friend.  Mom was really good at tennis.  She played in the USTA (US Tennis Association) on a Doubles Team.  She won several trophies under the doubles category as an Undefeated Doubles team.  She got so good at tennis that eventually every time that I played with her, she beat me.. so subsequently I quit playing tennis.  She continued to play tennis up until she underwent surgery at the hospital this October.   
She also tremendously enjoyed hosting a gathering and cooking for everyone.  She would always tell everyone to not bring any food because she was making all of the food.  She enjoyed hosting at her Aina Haina home in East Honolulu and everyone loved her cooking.
Mom had some favorite sayings but I think her most favorite saying especially was, "You're Goofy!  And, she would always say that to my dad.  You know, my dad would say or do something silly or unbelievable and my mom would respond by saying to him, You're Goofy!
My Mom and I shared a very special relationship which I will always hold close to my heart.   Once upon a time she confided with me that she could not have asked for a better son than she had in me. (And I find it incredible because I was not the oldest nor was I the youngest in fact I was the middle child) (Just Kidding!)  My mom really enjoyed my levity and antics and also thought I was Goofy!  If she was going to travel to places where there was gambling, like Reno or Las Vegas, she would say to me, Oh, you're not going to go with us..we're going to miss you!  My heart would sink with that thought so I would make every effort to be with my mom and dad and believe me I'm glad that I went, and I treasured every moment I spent with them.  Mom told my dad that I was her gambling partner.  Even though she did not win much, she so enjoyed just playing the different types of machines and said that she has so much fun playing them.   
Mom was a very special woman and of the many Confucius doctrines, the ones stated on the back page of the program are typical examples of mom.  My dad's wife, our mother, Barbara, was our strength, hope and most of all, our best friend.  We will miss her forever.  But, we shall not despair because she will always be up in Mahjong Heaven looking down upon us and will always be in our hearts and minds.
Mom would be very pleased by this celebration of her life and she would want me to pass on her love and well wishes to all of you.

Throughout all the time I spent with you when we visit Hawaii and when we went to Disneyland, has been some of the best moments in my life. I love you grandma and may you find everlasting peace in heaven.

I am what I am today because of your love. Thank you mom for that unchanging undying love that you gave me which was bestowed on you by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I love you mom to the moon and back!

Bobby was always such a Great  cook and joking.always and laughing.  She  was a great lady we will miss her.
Her Chinese almond cookies were so delicious.
We will remember you always Billie and Bob.  You are in a good place.

Don and Chrildren, We were very sorry to hear of the loss of your wife and mother, Barbara.  Barbara strength of spirit will remain with you always.  Hang on to each other and always hold Barbara love for you within your heart.

For you mom, a daughter couldn't ask for a better mom then you. Love you and miss you mom!

"Aloha. I am Eliza, one of Barbara's tennis partners. B you're the best champion among all of us seniors. You're resting in peace already and here we are still arguing about the score count, if the ball is in or out. It's always fun and games, especially with Barbara. I'll always remember how generous she was every Chinese new year when she gives us all t gau, and every Christmas we get almond cookies. She was also our tennis medicine woman, always have some Chinese medicine in her purse for whatever aches and pains we complain about. She even gave away plastic grocery bags nicely folded. We'll miss you tremendously, especially your loud laugh and willingness to tell and listen to funny jokes. We'll especially miss your somen cooking. The tennis court won't be the same without you Barbra, small yet mighty, strong, and giving. Aloha and Mahalo B may you rest in peace!"
