Beloved Wife, Mom, Nana, Aunty, Friend, Hula Sister, also known as Char to many… born in Honolulu, Oahu. She grew up in Kaimuki and attended Sacred Hearts Academy. Eventually she resided in Kailua, where she later graduated from Kailua High School. She married her first husband, Alfred Moniz, Jr. and had two children, Scott and Renee. She became a widow at such an early age, raising her two children with the help of her late mom, whom we called Nana. Charlotte preceded in death by her first husband, Alfred Moniz, Jr.,along with her parents, Oliver & Emily Barboza.
She later met her second husband, Terrence Kumaewa while on a blind date. If you haven’t heard their love story, Charlotte wore an ‘old man’ Halloween mask as an ice breaker. You can say it was love at first fright. Charlotte and Terry married in Las Vegas, surrounded by their family and friends in 1994. Together they raised a blended family of 5 children; Scott, Siri, Kathy, Renee and Peter, which has now grown to include 12 grandchildren and 8 great-
grandchildren.
Charlotte was very fond of horses, dogs and all animals in general. She was active with the“Kaneohe Leo Aikane” where she rode in many parades. She enjoyed caring for her horses, making leis and contributing as being the first horse unit to have “pooper scoopers”. Charlotte had a deep love for Hula, starting at a young age dancing for Aunty Bella Richards and continued dancing for many years with her Kumu Chinky Mahoe of Hula Hālau O’Kawail’iula. No matter where she was, if Hawaiian music was playing, she would get up to dance. After retiring, she became active with the Papakolea Community and expanded her love for hula with KULA, Kumu Macey Hoakalei Kamau’u.
Charlotte was loved by so many. She was known for her bright smile, funny personality, energetic laughter and loving energy…just to name a few. She would spread her aloha to anyone and everyone she encountered.
Not too long ago she found the love of making lei ‘iIliahi, known as sandalwood leis. It gave her extreme joy in gifting her leis to her fellow Papakolea Community, friends and to her ‘Ohana. That was just one of so many ways she would spread her aloha and love to all that were fortunate to have known her.
Charlotte looked forward to her frequent travels. She was privileged to have been to so many places, including her visits to see the ‘Ohana that lived in Montana and Las Vegas. She lived a beautiful life of 80 glorious years. She has gained her angel wings way too early, but we are extremely proud of her for fighting to be with us for as long as she possibly could. Our hearts ache with loss, but our love shines through lots of amazing memories. On behalf of the ‘Ohana of Charlottle Kumaewa, we would like to thank you all for being here to celebrate the beautiful life she shared with all of us.
