

Chiyoko Oguri Miyabara, loving wife and devoted mother, was born on May 1, 1923. She passed away on February 6, 2012. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a brownstone that accommodated both her father's medical practice and her loving and close family-- parents, four sisters, two brothers and numerous pets. She loved them all and was especially close to her elder sister Satako. She attended Barnard College, graduating in 1944 with a BS in Chemistry. Chiyo met her husband Carl, who hailed from Maui, Hawaii. They were introduced when Chiyo's brother, Toyo, brought Carl to New York on leave from the 442nd Regiment. Carl and Chiyo married in 1945 and spent several years in Maui, with his family, where the had a son Tetsuo. They spent 1947-1954 in Philadelphia where Carl earned a law degree and Chiyo worked in medical labs. When the family returned to Honolulu in 1955, Chiyo worked as the chief technician of the radioisotopes lab at Tripler Army Medical and then at the Hawaii Marine Biology Lab in Kaneohe and Kuikini Hospital. After retirement, she enjoyed volunteer work as docent at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. A Honolulu newspaper featured her using exquisite sensitivity in guiding handicapped children on a tour of the Academy. Chiyo Enjoyed her later years, completing family history albums, doing her favorite crossword puzzles and reading endlessly. She passed away peacefully, almost three years to the day that her husband Carl died earlier. She is survived by Tetsuo, daughter-in-law Barbara, granddaughter Jill, and two sisters, Teruko and Nanako.
A graveside remembrance and memorial for her will be held at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in Kaneohe, Hawaii on
June 12, 2012 at 11:00 am.
