Cindy Sing Hong Khong was born in Singapore on August 28, 1930. Orphaned at the age of 11 during the Japanese occupation of Singapore (1941 -1945 ) , she endured much hardship yet achieved success in her education, sports, and family life.
As a high school student, she represented Singapore in the national basketball team as their star player. She was also the national discus and hurdles champion. After graduating with a teaching certificate in 1951, she was married to Bill Koon Seng Ong and relocated to Kelantan, Malaysia where she set up home in the Ong family residence at Temangan, a small plantation town where the family business was based. Her family then moved to the state capital of Kota Bharu where she taught in the Chinese primary school and raised four children.
In Malaysia, Cindy was active in the community, in support of husband Bill who was very involved in community service as a founding life member and president of the Lions Club. As a school teacher and basketball coach, she had a fulfilling career and was very much devoted to her students and mentored them for many years and beyond. As a testament to this, until her last days, and for over 50 years, her students still kept in touch and credited her for their own successes.
Her teaching career lasted thirty years, until retirement in 1986 when Cindy and Bill migrated to Hawaii to be with their three sons, Eugene, Albert and Huey who were settled there. Daughter Elaine was settled in Melbourne, Australia.
In Honolulu, Cindy kept busy as a kindergarten teacher, worked in jewelry sales, and did volunteer work for ten years with the Golden Agers Association in Chinatown with husband Bill. Both were active members of the Chinese Presbyterian Church.
