Dear Clovis, The older I am getting the more I think about joining the army and lately that has made me think of you. I don’t remember you very well, but I miss you. You were an incredible friend to my father. I know that you are watching over your children and family and walking with them through their life.

I worked with Clovis briefly at Fort Benning in January-February 2011. He impressed me with his devotion to fitness, his positive attitude, and his professional demeanor. He was absolutely dedicated to training as an Infantryman. Even a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery barely slowed him down. His selfless service is a true credit to his family. My thoughts are with his loved ones. They should be proud. He is gone, but he is not forgotten.

I worked with Clovis a short time at Wachovia bank,I remember him always being so nice and trying to help me out with any goals I needed to meet for the month.The one thing we did have in common was Im an identical twin myself. I was talking with a friend of mine who was in the military and also deployed, even after its been a year or more I thought of Clovis Ray and how he made an impact on me he was an all around great person. Thank you for having the courage to serve our country you will always be remembered.

To the family of 2nd Lt. Clovis T. Ray:
Clovis gave the ultimate sacrifice and will be held in the hearts of Americans forever. I cannot and will not let our fallen heroes be forgotten. My deepest sympathy to you. "Some gave all."

I made a poster at school remembering the soldiers that passed away fighting for our country. Since we were able to choose our person, i stumbled upon Mr. Ray's story and found it very touching. Since it has almost been his one year anniversary, i would just like to wish his family the best and send them my prayers. Rest in peace Mr. Ray (: thank you for what you have done

I met Clovis during the first week I was on campus as Macalester.  He was so welcoming and easy to get along with.  My friendship with him would last thoughout our years at Macalester.  I remember him lending a shoulder to cry on, always there when you needed a friend.  I remember him being the most loyal brother to his twin and also to his teammates at Macalester.  I remember his ability show up and create a party atmosphere with his huge personality and smile.  He was an eternal motivater, always pushing those who knew him to be their best while pushing himself at the same time.  I was so lucky to be touched by his friendship.  May you rest in peace, I look forward to seeing you again in heaven.

Clovis, I remember that first year at Mac. I could barely tell you or Eddie apart, except you guys had to wear jerseys with your  numbers! You were a bright light of hope for us then, always optimistic, hard-working, and with a quick smile. You continue to be a ray of hope for me now Clovis. I'll see you on the other side my friend.

My condolences and prayers are with the Ray family. Clovis was a very respectful and true gentleman.  He assisted my mother during his employment at Wachovia and he left a lasting impression on both of us.  I prayed for him when he spoke of joining the Army. My heart goes out to his wife, son and family.

I've read how Clovis has been referred to as a fallen soldier, but in my opinion he is NOT a fallen soldier cus his SPIRIT has risen to Heaven..Clovis was not only our backdoor neighbor, He was my daughters good friend as well as his brother Eddie. He graduated with her in 1995.He played Football with my son n law and was oustanding player.His parents are down to earth people who taught their children to always respect others. In a small town like Three Rivers everyone tends to know each other esp. the ones who have lived here all their life.It was heart breaking to know that his life had been taken for our Country..He IS a Hero but even before that he was JUST Clovis, the guy who made friends everywhere and was loved by all.My condolences to his loving wife n child, Mr. n Mrs. Ray, Bob Jr., Jennifer,Eddie..I know he is Resting in Peace in Gods Hands..>ps. a quick example of Clovis kindness n respect for others,yall know boys usually round around without shirts on, well when he would come over to the house, he and his brother would out of respect put on their shirts as asked by Christinas dad.lol "old fashion" as they jumped over their fence and when they left, I would see them quickly take them off as they jumped back over to their house.This is how I will always remember Clovis,that smile he put on all faces.A lil boy I saw grow up to be an exceptionl Man, R.I.P. I got to know Clovis as a little girl growing up, watching him in sports and hanging out with my brother and sister.He was a awesome, never giving up type of person. Our hearts break for you. May you find confort in knowing that God has another archangel in heaven. Our son had the honor of working with Clovis as his Company Commander. You will forever be in our thoughts and prayers.

I had the Honor of being one of 2LT Ray's OCS instructors, and my husband was his IBOLC instructor.  Ray was a wonderful guy who spoke volumes about his wife and son.  He had a heart of gold, and wanted nothing more than to serve his country.  Asked many of times, why did you join the Army?  Being that he was a successful investment banker before joining at 32.  He always answered the same, it was something he felt he needed to do.  He was always the first to volunteer and the last to quit, always seeking out information and trying to learn and grow.  Ray was one of the most excited students on the day of branching when all his hard work paid off and he was able to select the branch he desired most, Infantry.  I truly believed in him the day he walked across that stage at the Iron works as 2LT Ray, no longer a candidate....a statement I dont make often.  God bless your family in your time of need, know that he loved you, and was trying to do the right thing by serving his country.

I just wanted to let you know that I had never heard of him till today but wish I had. my condolences to the Ray family.  I knew Clovis when he worked at Wachoia in San Antonio.  I was a customer and I can't express how out of his way Clovis always went to help my family in any situation.  Every time I went into the bank Clovis always greeted me with his beautiful smile and knew exactly who I was, even if it was a phone call.  My husband who banked elsewhere said, "I think I need to change banks everyone is always so friendly here".  I guess that's the way Clovis always was.  We are saddened by his loss and honored to have known him if only for a short time.

My prayers and deepest sympathy are sent to Shannon, Dean and Clovis' parents and Eddie. Both Clovis and Eddie were blessings to my son Lee's life.  He met them through football at Macalester and a great friendship formed.  When Lee was hospitalized for a head injury Clovis and Eddie were the ones that saw he was taken to the hospital.  In the 30 days he was in the hospital both of those guys were there to visit every evening and if they both couldn't make it one came but both were there almost every night. They were a great blessing to my husband and I. Clovis was such a wonderful young man and I am very proud to say he was a friend of my son's and a guest at our home several times in their jaunts to and from school during the years at Macalester.  Each year I continued to receive a Christmas card from Clovis and then Clovis & Shannon.  I am so saddened for all of you.  Please know my life and life of our family was greatly enriched from knowing Clovis. Blessings

The 35th Infantry Regiment Association expresses its most sincere feelings during this time of grief. Even though our members have fought in four different wars, we have all walked the same common ground and suffer the loss of our brother in arms, Clovis. When I had moved from New York to Texas, Clovis made me feel welcome.  I met him at Wachovia when I came in to open an account.  He always would have a big smile and would come out to talk to me.  He was so proud of his family, especialy, his son.  His face would just glow while talking about him.  I'll always remember the day he told me he was joining the army to serve our country.  I felt so proud of him. He was my first friend when I moved to San Antonio.  My condolances to his family.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another. 

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to 2LT Clovis T. Ray our Brother-in-Arms.   To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Clovis.  And to Clovis it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the supreme sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan.  No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another.  Clovis, you gave the last full measure of devotion for what you believed in and fought for.  You are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero.  With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure.  We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
