Edit had many fond memories of living in this historic city. Some of her memories were of skating on the frozen pond outside the castle; carrying a pan of dough to the local bakery to be baked into tasty bread for their evening meal or special occasion; the ringing of the church bells on Christmas and New Year’s; Konigsberg marzipan; evenings spent playing with their dolls by the stove; the sweet singing of her pet canary; their loving maternal grandmother, Rosa; and train rides to the seaside.
Though she had no brothers and sisters, she was very close to her mother’s family, consisting of aunts, uncles and cousins. Horst Beinnek (deceased) and Ingelore Biennek were like a brother and sister to her.
The realities of World War II dominated their young adult years. The food rationing, the air raids and hiding in shelters became a part of life. One evening as they walked home, her mother told her that they should go to another nearby shelter instead of trying to reach their apartment’s basement. That night their apartment building was hit.
After graduation Edit was assigned to work at a local government office. She was then assigned to work at a P.O.W. camp helping to distribute C.A.R.E. packages.
As the Red Cross reunited the surviving family Wiesbaden became their home. Mom first worked in the Mess Hall for the U.S. military where she met her future husband, Jerry Pang. She later found work at a magazine publishing company.
Jerry proposed to Edit when he returned to Hawaii after graduating from college. Edit accepted and traveled half way around the world to make a new life in Hawaii. They were married on August 6, 1955.
They had three (3) daughters together. Edith’s job was now caring for her family. She was a good cook and we enjoyed many baked goods. She was a patient and loving mother and grandmother.
Though she never won anything from her countless sweepstakes entries, Edith and Jerry enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas often after Jerry retired. They visited a few other locations, but the tour always had to include a few days in Las Vegas.
The family would like to thank our wonderful caregiver, Cydin Liess, and sweet senior companion, Placita Martell, who have cared for both Jerry and Edith these past few months.
