My heartfelt condolences to all of the Lau family. The Alexander Store was a fixture in my Punahou after school routine: go buy a manapua, red whips, or li hing mui before hopping on the long bus ride out to Portlock. And, needless to say, the shave ice was beyond compare! But no spot would have been so anticipated to visit if it had not been manned by Mr and Mrs Lau. Not only were they both kind and friendly to me, I often thought how pretty Mrs Lau was and wondered why she wasn't a model or something! I hope the entire Lau family knows what a beautiful couple their parents/grandparents were and what joy they brought to our lives through their daily gesture of running their store and the way they did it. Mahalo to them for being a fixture in our community and the embodiment of our local values: dignity, generosity of spirit, and aloha. Marquita Biven Denison

My heartfelt condolences to the Lau family for your loss with Esther's passing. Alexander Grocery was one of my favorite places to walk from school in the 1960's & 70's. The Laus were always so friendly! I never dreamed they and their store wouldn't be there someday, but I'm happy it afforded the Laus a good life and then some! Thanks for the memories!

I always used to walk to the store from Punahou, where I lived. I remember how encouraging and friendly Mr. and Mrs. Lau were. And also the shave ice, manapua and dry cuttlefish. Moved to Maui in 1971 and always wondered about them. Fond memories, Aloha, Wild Bill.

My condolences to the entire Lau family. The passing of Esther reminds me of the times on Moa Street where my family lived three doors away.

Our condolences to the Lau family. Spent many fun hours at Heulu Street like we were part of the family some 50+ years ago at Gramma Lau's.
