Ethel Claire Hall was born in Cambridge, MA, to Albert E. and Georgina H. Scott Hall on August 17, 1921. Ethel’s early years were spent in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. She graduated from Philadelphia’s Frankford High School in 1939.
Ethel and Samuel Bancroft Bird of Wilmington, DE, were married in 1955. The couple moved from Wilmington to Honolulu in 1970 and resided at The Kahala Beach Condominiums where Ethel served on the board.
Ethel was a volunteer for the Assistance League of Hawaii, a non-profit philanthropic organization dedicated to helping children and families in Hawaii. Sam and Ethel Bird were long-time members of the Central Union Church and the Oahu Country Club. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their beach-front condo over the years as well as dining at various Honolulu restaurants including the Maile Room at The Kahala Hilton Hotel where they were frequent patrons of “Danny’s Show.” Besides touring each of the Hawaiian Islands, Sam and “Candy” traveled the world extensively—but it was Hawaii that was their paradise.
Ethel was known for her beauty, charm, and great sense of style. She was fun-loving and fun to be with and had an exceptionally keen wit. Ethel was a devoted, generous, and wonderful wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who was respected, admired, and loved. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends and forever remembered.
Ethel was preceded in death by Sam (d.1987); her parents; sister, Hazel; sister, Gladys (“Hap”) Hall Colbert of Champaign, IL; sister, Ruth Geraldine (Gerri) Wylie of Philadelphia, PA; and succeeded by a nephew. She is survived by four nieces and three nephews, several great-nieces and nephews, and her dear friend and “Hawaiian daughter.”
A private service was held at sea near Diamond Head in Honolulu on May 10, 2014.
Memorials in Ethel’s honor may be made to the Assistance League of Hawaii, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.
