

Gary Kamaka "Squid" Loo, 75, of Kaneʻohe, Hawaii, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, at the Queenʻs Medical Center. Born on July 11, 1950, Gary lived a life deeply rooted in family, community, and service.
Gary’s early years were spent in Honolulu, where he attended Maryknoll School and Ala Wai Elementary School before continuing his education at Washington Intermediate School for seventh and eighth grade. He graduated from Saint Louis School as a proud member of the Class of 1968. His passion for football led him to Santa Ana Junior College, where he played the sport, he loved.
In 1970, Gary began a distinguished career with the Honolulu Police Department, serving his community with dedication until his retirement in 1996. Following his time with the police force, he continued to contribute to the safety and well-being of others as a security personnel at Saint Louis High School from 1996 to 2001. From there, he took on the role of Watch Commander at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, where he worked from 2001 until his retirement in 2021. During this time, he also worked part-time as a security officer at the Princess Kaʻiulani Hotel.
Gary’s love for sports extended beyond his own playing days; he coached football and paddling at Saint Louis School. He found immense joy in mentoring young athletes and took pride in watching them succeed both on the field and in life.
Family was at the heart of Gary’s life. He was a devoted husband to Elizabeth Kealiikuaaina "Queenie" Harbottle Loo and a loving father to Kealiikuaaina Dawn Loo, Lahela Kimberly Loo, Kealamaikahiki Gary Chun Harbottle Loo (and daughter-in-law Leah Gianina Loo), and Keola Wah Sun Loo (and daughter-in-law Shannon Katerina Loo). He cherished his nine grandchildren: Kealiikuaaina Saʻolele Meleana Storm Loo Godinet, Naluwaea Toafa Loo, Kealamaikahiki Samuel Wah Sun Loo, Carmen Kaimoʻokalani Loo, Victoria Rose Makalapua Loo, Oliver Kealamaikahiki Loo, Kalanialiʻiloa Patrick Fetu Kamaka Loo, Oneavea Lahela Ruth Loo, and Aolele Faʻamalepe Queenie Loo.
Gary was predeceased by his parents Herbert Chun Loo and Victoria Meleana Kaaiakamanu Loo; brothers Samuel Kapule Loo and Calvin Kalani Loo; sister Janice Helen Kehaunani Sligh; sister-in-law Davanette Mary Kaimoʻokalani Cabinatan; and brother-in-law Howard Kealiiokamoku Harbottle.
Known for his warm heart and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, Gary was a pillar of strength for those around him. He treasured Sunday dinners with his family and took great pride in spending time with his grandchildren as they grew up. His legacy is one of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he held dear.
Gary will be remembered not only as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, coach, and friend but also as someone who made an indelible impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
