Gerald Joong Pui Lum

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for his life that we announce the passing of Gerald J.P. Lum, a cherished son, brother, teacher, and friend. Born on May 12, 1963, in the beautiful city of Honolulu, Hawaii, Gerald illuminated the lives of those around him with his boundless energy and warmth until his peaceful departure on August 31, 2026.

Gerald was the beloved son of Gilbert and Thelma Lum, who instilled in him the values of compassion and dedication that would guide him throughout his life. He grew up surrounded by the love and camaraderie of his siblings, Gilda Young, Darryl Lum, Reynold Lum, and Shelly Young, who remain to cherish his memory and carry forward his legacy.

After graduating from Kalani High School in 1982, Gerald pursued his passion for education at the University of Hawaii, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching. His commitment to nurturing young minds led him to a fulfilling career at Nanakuli High & Intermediate School, where he worked tirelessly to inspire and support his students. Gerald's dedication went beyond the classroom, as he maintained lasting relationships with his students, who often returned to share their successes with him and introduce their own children to their beloved teacher.

Gerald was known for his infectious sense of humor and the genuine kindness he extended to everyone he met. His ability to connect with people on a personal level made him not only a respected educator but also a cherished friend. His home was filled with laughter, love, and the joyful presence of his two dogs, Buddy and Bailey. Although Buddy has since passed, Bailey continues to bring joy to the life of one of Gerald's dear friends, a retired teacher from Nanakuli High & Intermediate School.

In his personal life, Gerald faced challenges with remarkable strength and resilience. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Dialysis facility in Kapolei, whose compassionate care allowed Gerald to live a full and meaningful life over the past decade.

In accordance with Gerald's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor his memory. The family extends their deepest appreciation for the love and support they have received during this difficult time.

Gerald's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all those he touched and the countless lives he inspired.
